Such a scary story.
We're just glad the children ended up OK.
However, it remains to be seen what will happen to Ebony Wilkerson, the pregnant woman who drove her van and three kids into the ocean, after she was charged with three counts of premeditated attempted first degree murder.
Daytona Beach police actually initially stopped the pregnant mother after her sister called police saying how her sister had left the house with the kids talking about some pretty weird stuff. Her sister said:
"She's talking about Jesus, that there's demons in the house. She's got the kids in the car with her."
When the police stopped her, she seemed OK, so the police had to let her go.
Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said:
"If she made any statements that she was suicidal or homicidal officers would have taken her into custody."
After she drove the van into the ocean, rescuers sprung into action and saved the three children. One rescuer Tim Tesseneer said:
"The two in the back seat was crying, with their arms out saying 'Our mommy's trying to kill us, please help'. The kids are like, 'No there's a baby. There's a baby. She (the mother) wouldn't say a word. She didn't tell us nothing about a baby. She had this look on her face. I can't describe it. It was just an awful blank look, like spaced out look."
Police say the children were lucky to have escaped the van alive, and if they had been in there for even a couple more minutes - the outcome would've most likely be different. Volusia County Beach Safety Dir. Mark Swanson said:
"The waves were strong, and the water was cold. If it had been minutes longer, the outcome probably would have been different."
Luckily, all of the children are OK.
And hopefully their mom will get the help she needs, and the children will be placed in the hands of relatives or friends of the family that will be able to give them the proper care they need.
