heroic teen sacrificed himself to save girlfriend from oncoming train

Mateus Moore may have departed this world, but he'll always be remembered as a hero.

A teenage boy was struck and killed by a train in Marysville, California, but not before pushing his girlfriend away saving her from certain death.

Unfortunately she was still partially hit by the train, and remains in the hospital in critical condition. If he hadn't pushed her, she would've certainly died instantly.

16-year-old Mateus and Mickayla Friend were walking on the train tracks last Friday around 7pm when the incident occurred. Officials are confused about what happened since it does not appear that either of the teenagers were intoxicated or wearing headphones.

The two were getting some snacks before their school dance when it all happened. One 11-year-old witness (we hope they're okay too — so young to see something like that) saw the whole thing right from when the train was coming and said:

"The engineer was on the horn. Then finally, they both looked back at the same time."

The witness's father, also a witness, said:

"They would have both been underneath that train if he didn't push her out of the way at the last second."

The girl's family have called the heroic teenager amazing, and the girlfriend's sister said:

"It's her first boyfriend, and her first love."

Such a tragic story. Our thoughts go out to the victim's family, and we truly hope his girlfriend Mickayla Friend makes a quick and full recovery.

RIP Mateus Moore, we hope your memory lives on.

Very sad story. I was almost hit by a train. When you are on the track (not smart and I have never walked on them since) the tracks don't shake and you don't hear the train (unlike when you are outside of the tracks). It is almost like you are in a vacuum. I understand how they didn't hear the train until it was too late.

They shouldn't have been walking on the tracks in the first place… needless death.

Re: Rastah – didn't know that. i was wondering why they couldn't feel it coming via vibration.

It would be best if this young girl met her boyfriend on the other side, in my opinion. If she survives, she will forever fell guilty and she will most likely live a very hard life. Very tough situation.

Re: RastahRe: why – I actually go to school with both these kids. The train tracks was a shortcut a lot of us use to go to a nearby store. I didnt know them personally, but i heard they were both amazing people. RIP Mateus.

I've walked the same tracks all the time when I was a teenager. It's actually a very quick short cut to the store, my friends and I used it all the time. Lots of kids still do these days but I hope less kids will walk the tracks now, or at least be much much much more cautious when crossing them. It's a very sad situation, and both families in my prayers.

Ridiculous! You DO NOT walk on tracks! I do not understand how you cannot hear a train horn while on the tracks.

Sorry @rastha - but you don't need to hear vibrations if he was BLOWING THE HORN!!!! Which any engineer would have done as soon as they saw people on the tracks - and the witnesses stated that.

Just stupid, senseless and stupid. You get hit by a train on its tracks it is YOUR FAULT. Trains have a limited path - unless they are derailing. You walk on a track and get hit, stop your car on tracks and get hit or get hit by any other way other than derailment it is YOUR fault.

Sorry I'm willing to bet they were either high or drunk or in someway intoxicated if they did not have headphones on. Just no way to NOT hear a train blowing on its horn. Those things are obscenely LOUD for a REASON. Rastah no offense but your full of crap. I have walked on tracks before and there is no magic VACUUM that sound waves don't travel down. I have heard the train coming as well as FELT it coming long before it got where I was. I would not be the least bit surprised to find out these 2 were baked outta there mind. There is no other logical explanation. What you thought that big ass blowing horn was some other train???
