Badass Middle School Girls & Parents Protest School's Ridiculous New Ban On Leggings & Yoga Pants!

middle school girls rally against school sexist dress code

The U.S. is the land of the free, and the home of the brave — and schools SERIOUSLY need to stop hatin' on how girls look and dress!

Haven Middle School in Evanston, Illinois has a new dress code that is infuriating its female students and their parents! And with good reason!

School officials issued a notification that essentially bans all of their female students from wearing shorts, leggings, or yoga pants because they've deemed those articles of clothing "too distracting" for the male students!

Obviously the girls at the school are NOT happy with the dress code, and find it absolutely sexist!

Luckily, their parents are taking their daughters' side!

Here's what some of the parents wrote in a joint post:

“This kind of message lands itself squarely on a continuum that blames girls and women for assault by men. It also sends the message to boys that their behaviors are excusable, or understandable given what the girls are wearing. We really hope that you will consider the impact of these policies and how they contribute to rape culture.”

One wicked smart 13-year-old named Sophie Hasty made a sound argument when she said:

“Not being able to wear leggings because it’s ‘too distracting for boys’ is giving us the impression we should be guilty for what guys do. We just want to be comfortable!”

In fact, some of the students have created a brilliant poster that reads “Are my pants lowering your test scores?” to fight against this policy!

Haven Middle School hasn't made its final decision yet though, and with a petition of over 500 signatures that side with the students who are outraged by this dress policy, we hope they decide against this "code".

Unless you're a school that demands a uniform that's rigid and equal for both boys and girls, we see no problem with girls wearing clothes like this!

Leggings aren't pants though. So they shouldn't be worn like that anyway. But their reasoning for banning the leggings are fucking ridiculous. It's basically saying that women are to blame they are sexually assaulted, because the clothes they wore were provocative towards men. You could say that of any type of clothing. Boys should be taught not to touch a woman like that unless she's given her approval. Simple as that.

I have to disagree, it is not saying women are at fault for being assaulted. Instead, imagine a 5 ct diamond laying on the floor with nobody around it and no where to turn it in. If you were to walk by it and see it, you would definitely take it because of its beauty as well as it's value. A women is so beautiful and worth so much that men cannot help but to stare especially when half naked. During school hours, boys who already going through puberty should have minimal distractions. Let's not forget, it has been scientifically proven that men have sexual urges that are incomparable to women. So I'm sorry, I think this school enforced that rule because it must of been an extreme distraction. The girls probably dress provocatively for their age and since parents are so ok with it, the school had to do something about it.

Re: Heather – that's just the same thing. It's not ok to take something that doesn't belong to you even it is valuable or pretty, you go to the police, like a good citizen.

Yo don't rape a girl because you have "urges", you are not a dog, you are a human being, and you are able to do so. You don't rape a girl just because she is pretty and valuable, you look at her, you can even masturbate to her. But under no circumstances you assault her, because those "urges" are not, by any reason, an excuse for make another human being miserable. You let her be, you let her have her sexual freedom, like a good citizen would do.

Re: Heather – And if they are distracted by it, it's their own problem, not the girls'. That would be like not allowing you to eat because there are thirsty people all over the world. They have to over come it, they are going to be surrounded by women their whole academic and work life. They should get used to it.

Leggings are not pants. It's become a huge issue in my city- mostly from a fashion standpoint! Most of the leggings out there for girls to buy are very sheer. The shirts girls are paring them with are too short. This look can't be comfortable!!

The reason the school is giving is silly but the ban isn't. When I was in school girls would wear shorts way to short and leggings way to thin. It was inappropriate and I couldn't imagine being a parent and letting my child dress like that. Is it wrong for a work environment to set a dress code and ban in appreciate clothing? No. So why can't a school ban such clothing?

I'm going to have to disagree. every single time I see a girl wear leggings or yoga pants, and they bend over, I see their ass/ underwear. Every. Single. Time This ban has nothing to do with sexual assault. It's inappropriate clothing.

Um, leggings show girl's vaginas. They are super inappropriate. If guys were wearing tight thin pants like that, it would also be a big deal. It's nicer to say no to all of it, then single young girls out and say "your 5 dollar leggings from forever 21 are see through. ..everyone can see your underwear".

Um, you can see genitals through these "pants". If boys wore things like that it would also not be allowed. It's nicer to say no one can wear them then single out the poor girls who are showing their vaginas. Also, leggings can be see through. Any cheap pair from like forever 21 you can see underwear through. No one should ever wear these as pants. No one. Any type of work out pant should only be worn to work out or sleep. It's a repulsive fad.

One day all of the boys should go to school wearing leggings. It's not against the school's idiotic dress code for the boys the wear leggings, just the girl's. It would be a great form of protest, don't ya think? ;-)

    Re: Julie
Or yoga pants either one would get the point across. I never thought leggings pants either but, now it's all kids are these days. Good God. I sound like my mother. Btw, if you don't wear a small shirt over leggings that are too tight, there will be no Vay jay jay's peeking out. Just saying.

Re: Melissa – The look is comfortable it is just totally inappropriate! Leggings have turned into what tights/nylons used to be. Girls wear them tight -of course with short tops. Fine if your are going to the gym - NOT fine as "regular" apparel. I wear yoga pants to clean house or sleep in or exercise in. I would NEVER wear them as a normal outfit.

Here's the column I wrote that introduced the topic in Evanston…though it's a national issue (as much as many people don't want it to be):

I work at this school and I can tell you we, the staff and school, never changed the dress code just simply started enforcing it. We also never used the excuse that it distracts boys, or there body doesn't fit the outfit. What is interesting, is the parent who started all of this never bothered to fact check or call the school to find out what the deal was, she simply took her 13yo's word for it. Leggings are acceptable in school as long as they are not worn like pants because they are not pants. They can wear them under skirts, dresses or long tops. It is ridiculous that this "ban" has gotten so big because of misinformation and parents not double checking the facts.
