Well, they're not really taking over.
But there are more of them on the app than ever!
Tinder is a dating app that allows users to potentially be connected with other users based on if they swipe left, or if they swipe right. If you like someone, swipe right — and if they swipe right on you too, then you're connected!
While the app originally was used mainly by 18 to 24-year-olds, that number has changed recently.
“Early on, over 90% of our user base was aged between 18 and 24. Today, that number is about 51%. 13-17 year-olds are now over 7%, 25-32 year-olds are about 32%, 35-44 is about 6.5% and the remainder are older than 45.”
But if the app is meant for only people who are aged 18-year-old and older, then why would high schoolers or even middle schoolers sign up for it?
Here is Mateen's theory:
“As someone who’s younger in high school, you want to be a college kid."
But Scott Driscoll of Internet Safety Concepts is concerned about these numbers, and also has another theory about why underage teenagers may sign up for the app. He said:
"It was brought to my attention by middle school principals and middle school parents that their young children are using it. Young kids are dealing with self-esteem issues sometimes and if someone likes them that's going to make them feel really good. Let's say for example I go to the mall and I turn Tinder on and I start scrolling through and I see a picture of someone I like, it can tell me they're within one mile of me. The major concern I have with this is my child being exposed to pictures that aren't appropriate for his or her age and communicating with strangers. And possibly having strangers trying to meet my child."
So watch out Tinder users! That cute girl you're talking to may be more of a kid than you realize!
And a warning should go out especially to the underage users of Tinder! Please don't meet up with strangers, but if you're set on doing it - make sure you have your friends with you, or at the very least - make sure it's in a VERY public place!
Tinder is a powerful app, and with great power comes great responsibilities!
P.S. — If the app is meant for people 18+, how can they accurately tell how many underage kids are on it? Wouldn't they have to lie about their age to sign up?
