Antonia Ayres-Brown wasn't just another normal 11-year-old girl. She saw a need for change and worked towards it, not stopping until she had achieved her goal.
It all started when her family went to the McDonald's drive-thru and Antonia got to thinking… what if Happy Meal toys were gender neutral?
She even wrote McDonald's CEO, though all she got back was a note from the customer satisfaction office saying their workers were never told to ask gendered questions when giving out Happy Meal toys.
Antonia wasn't satisfied and so she continued to dig, visiting more McDonald's locations until she was able to put her data into a complaint!
She filed with the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities against McDonald's for their sex-based discrimination.
The Commission said her claim was "absurd." Even though 79% of McDonald's workers weren't asking if she wanted a boys or girls toy with her Happy Meal.
So in her last, greatest move, in summer 2013, she sent children into different Mickey Ds and had them order the Happy Meal.
The kids were usually not asked what toy they'd like and if they went back up and asked for the other gender's toy, they were turned down or told there were no other toys.
When an adult asked? The toy was quickly swapped.
This new evidence allowed Antonia to write McDonald's new CEO and get some change enacted!
McDonald's finally responded:
"It is McDonald’s intention and goal that each customer who desires a Happy Meal toy be provided the toy of his or her choice, without any classification of the toy as a 'boy' or 'girl' toy and without any reference to the customer’s gender. We have recently reexamined our internal guidelines, communications and practices and are making improvements to better ensure that our toys are distributed consistent with our policy."
That's amazing! Antonia is 16 now and has been fighting for this since she was 11!
Perseverance really does pay off!
Way to go, Antonia!
