Does the punishment fit the crime??
A Utah woman has been charged with six counts of first degree murder after six infant bodies were found in Megan Huntsman's former garage in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Another deceased infant was found there, as well, but that one is considered to have been stillborn.
Megan had lived in Pleasant Grove up until 2011. The infants found are considered to have been Megan's own.
However, Huntsman cannot face the death penalty because the alleged crimes occurred between 1996-2006, and Utah had only changed its law in 2007 to make it so that the murder of a person under the age of 14 is considered a capital offense.
Before that law was passed, the murder of a child was not considered a factor that made one eligible for the death penalty.
Megan was charged with the counts of first degree murder this past Monday, and it's believed that she killed the infants immediately after they were born. The 39-year-old is currently being held on $6 million bail.
Megan was originally arrested on April 12th after her estranged husband Darren West found one infant body while cleaning out the garage. After police were called to the scene, six more bodies were found. She apparently admitted to police that she strangled or suffocated the babies immediately they were born, and did this for six of the infants while one was born stillborn. Ugh — so hard to hear!
Utah authorities are awaiting DNA tests to confirm that Megan was indeed the mother of the babies, and have also brought in the FBI to assist them with this during their investigation of such an awful crime!
It's hard to believe such monsters exist in this world!
