Parents Commit Alleged Double Suicide After Mother's Deteriorating Health Left Father Severely Distraught
We feel so bad for their children.
Two parents named Earl and Mary Myatt were married for 42 years before their lives were cut short.
The couple were both struck by a CSX freight train, and killed instantly in what seems to be a joint suicide in Verona, New York. Security footage from the scene show the couple standing around, waiting for the oncoming train.
The father called his son Bradford Myatt two minutes before his and his wife's death.
Here's what the son said:
“He called me at 1:35, and at 1:37, they were dead. We’re devastated … but I want everyone to know that my father was a good man, and my mother was an angel who would do anything for anybody.”
The son believed that the brain aneurysm that his mother was diagnosed with in January contributed to his father's worsening depression. The mother, too, was "frustrated" with the limitations her diagnosis had enforced on her life. The son said:
“He was saddened by what she had been reduced to. He missed his wife.”
Police are still investigating what exactly happened this past Sunday in upstate NY. They also will investigate how fast the train was traveling, and if it tried to stop before the fatal crash.
Here's what Trooper Jack Keller said:
“It appears they just picked a random location. We have witnesses who said they heard a warning horn … but there is video that shows they stood right on the tracks waiting for it to come.”
Although the loss of their beloved parents have devastated their children, their son Bradford has chosen to look at it from a different sort of angle. He said:
"We were spoiled in receiving two fantastic parents."
