Emma Thompson might not be the first person to come to mind when you think controversy.

But she shared an opinion on Sunday that landed her in some hot water!

Emma is a great mother, there's no denying that: hell, she took a year off from her a career to spend more time with her 14-year-old daughter Gaia Wise!

Emma said:

"A year off was my birthday present to myself. I didn’t actually act or write. I was just a mum. I taught drama at my daughter’s school, cooked meals, and had fun. I highly recommend others to do the same, if they can afford it."

That's a great idea! The only problem is many people don't share her $50 million fortune.

So people were obviously upset when she continued:

"You can’t be a great mum and keep working all the time."

Whoa, that's a little intense!

There are so many incredible mothers out there who work multiple jobs and still find time to be there for their kids!

We understand what she's trying to say, we only wish she'd have thought a little more about what words she was going to use!

Enough of this hypersensitive culture, nothing she said is offensive or disparaging. She may actually be right, who knows? But, the truth does hurt.

Maybe her next birthday present to herself should be a reality check. Not everyone is wealthy and must work for a living. I am a full time working mother. I honestly wouldn't have it any other way.!!My child and I appreciate each other sooo much more than if I smothered her 24/7. At some point your children grow up. Let them grow and be social. Not being the center of their universe teaches them independence and confidence. If I didn't work my daughter wouldn't have the house she lives in or the life that she has. Sure, there's days I wish I could stay home on a Monday and take her to the movies, but such is life. One day I hope she appreciates all i've done for her as I appreciate all my mother did for me. And THAT is what a GREAT mother is!

Re: PROUD WORKING MOTHER – A little sensitive are we? She specified that you should do it IF you can afford it.

I agree with her. I don't think she's knocking down on working mothers, but there is definitely a difference in a childs life if a parent can be available 24/7 vs trying as hard as they can to both be with the child and put food on the table. You can be a wonderful hardworking mother, but there's still a difference. I myself will be unable to afford to not work after I'm a mother, as most women willl be unable to. I will still be a good mother but I won't be able to put in that extra 24/7 time that mothers who do not work can provide. Just the way of the world.

she did say "if they can afford it". we cannot have it all and do it all really well. something has to give. children require / deserve a lot of attention. there are only 24 hours in a day. if you work 8 hours + 1 hour for lunch, commute 2 hours, sleep 8 hours. that is already 19 hours used up. now add food shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, dishes, etc.

She's obviously talking about her situation. In her working world she has to go away for months at a time to film movies so for most celebrities you can't be a parents if you're working all the time. The average working mom sees their children everyday if they work but Emma doesn't. Just because she generalized her statement doesn't mean she was talking about ALL moms.
