Lacey Spears might have seemed like just an unlucky mother whose child was stricken with health issues since birth.
Her son Garnett was often dealing with mystery illnesses since he was only a few days old.
During his most recent hospital stay, Garnett had a G.I. tube in his stomach. That's where it's believed Lacey gave her son a lethal dose of sodium.
It's thought she may have given him a dangerous dose of sodium before his hospital stay, which gave him seizures, which sent him to the hospital in the first place.
It's believed to be a case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, where a mother will keep her child sick because she needs the attention.
The hospital looked into her son's extreme spikes in sodium levels and could only conclude that she had fed him a high dose through his stomach tube. She was allegedly later found to have researched on the internet what a high dose of sodium would do to a child.
After Spears was arrested, Capt. Christopher Calabrese, commander of the Westchester County Police Detective Division, said:
"This is a very sad day for everyone, but it is a day for justice. Justice for the betrayal of the intimate trust between a mother and child; justice for a mother's continual abuse and death of her innocent child for her own selfish psychological needs and financial gain; justice for Garnett."
So now, Spears is being held without bail, charged with with one count of "depraved murder" and one count of first-degree manslaughter. She's plead not guilty.
We're so sad that she wasn't caught before she caused lethal damage to her son. Now he's gone but not forgotten. Justice will be served.
