Florida Woman Arrested For Keeping Her Baby On A Vegan Diet Despite Doctor's Orders

Sarah Anne Markham was arrested for child neglect and refusing to listen to doctor's orders!

A Florida woman was arrested Tuesday for child neglect after she refused to take her baby to a hospital or listen to doctor's orders because it conflicted with her child's vegan diet.

The incident began when Sarah Anne Markham took her baby to a pediatrician, where doctors told her that her child was dehydrated and needed to be taken to the hospital immediately.

However, the Department of Children and Families got a tip that she did NOT take her baby to the hospital after she left the office.

Sarah insisted that her child was fine and refused to give her the baby formula that was given to her by the pediatrician because it wasn't vegan and instead went with a soy formula she bought at Whole Foods.

Police ordered her to take her baby to the hospital and she eventually agreed, however, she refused to let doctors give her child any formula that contained animal products. After lots and lots of arguing, she was later arrested for not cooperating.

We're all for keeping your baby healthy, but this is a situation where the diet was CLEARLY having a negative affect on the child's health.

If she could just get the child back to a healthy state and could find a way to compromise on the diet she wanted to continue with the little one on — so health problems wouldn't be an issue — that would best!

It sucks to have to go against your beliefs, but sometimes it has to happen for the safety of your child! And DON'T ignore trained health professionals!

So has nothing to do with vegan diets but just an idiot mother, of which there are plenty who are omnivores. Just FYI vegan diets have been approved as adequate and having health benefits for all stages of life including pregnancy and childhood by the ADA, one of the biggest groups in the world concerned with diet and nutrition.

being vegan has nothing to do with a child getting dehydrated. stop peddling crap you're not informed on. there is nothing wrong with soy formula. mothers with lactose intolerant babies use it everyday and have healthy children.

I don't think the diet is the problem here. Way to spin a story into something that it isnt. The mom clearly isnt fit, vegan or not.

Vegans are a PITA, my mother refused to stop cooking special meals for my nephew for Thanksgiving so he had to bring his own tofu or whatever.
Babies need lots of extra vitamins, so maybe not a good idea to force your views onto your baby?

I guess we should arrest Jehovah witnesses since they don't believe in blood transfusions so they would rather let their children die.

I'm not a vegan nor do I care to be (sorry I love meat and cheese too much) but I don't see why that diet would be unhealthy for a baby. Aren't vegans usually pretty healthy. Not to mention my son had to be on soy formula when he was an infant and he was always hydrated and healthy.

"She then said she would take the child to Florida Hospital South but only because she was being forced to, according to authorities. About an hour later, however, she was still at home and was placed under arrest."
She was arrested because she did not take the baby to the hospital. Not because of the formula. No one said the soy formula was unsafe for the baby. They just wanted her to check with the doctor first.
