Well, well, well, what have we got here?
Science proving that same-sex attracted parents have no negative side effects on their children?
Oh, and that their children scored 6% higher than kids of heterosexual parents in almost all areas of the study??
Australian scientists got together to conduct a survey of 390 self-identified same-sex attracted parents of which 315 parents completed it (the largest study of it's kind) to see what kind of effects the stigma of having gay parents has on children.
Well, the sample size was bigger than previous studies taken, with this one including 80% females, 18% males, representing children from 0-17.
So, the only downside the study found was that there was only one overall negative scoring component of it and that was on the children's mental health.
The conclusion explained:
'Australian children with same-sex attracted parents score higher than population samples on a number of parent-reported measures of child health. Perceived stigma is negatively associated with mental health.'
So, what EXACTLY does this mean? Their kids are more likely to have mental health problems?
Well, Not exactly.
Before anyone jumps on the "see they're still damaging kids" bandwagon, the specifics meant that the kids mental health directly correlated to the negative stigma still associated with kids of same-sex parents.
So, basically, the negative findings of the study weren't caused by the parents themselves, it was caused by the bigots of the world who give these types of families a bad name by bullying the children because their parents of LGBTQ.
However, focusing on the positive aspect, the scientists believe that the children scored higher due to same-sex parents being more involved in their children's lives AND that there was more planning involved when deciding to have a child.
SUCH great news! We're SO happy that this information has surfaced!
While it may not be enough to fully convince people who fight AGAINST LGBTQ parents adopting/having children, it definitely helps!
You go, Australia!
