American teenagers' usage of HGH or Human Growth Hormone has skyrocketed as the amount of teens who've tried the substance has doubled in the year of 2013.
The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids conducted a survey for 2013 of 3,705 high school students and its findings are astonishing!
The survey found that 11 percent of the study's participants have tried the synthetic HGH at least once which is up from 5 percent from the past four annual surveys.
Steroid use has also increased amongst teens from five percent to now seven percent!
The CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency Mr. Travis Tygart is NOT surprised by these numbers though! Here's what he said in an interview:
“It’s what you get when you combine aggressive promotion from for-profit companies with a vulnerable target — kids who want a quick fix and don’t care about health risk. It’s a very easy sell, unfortunately.”
And it isn't just boys who are using the synthetic HGH. While 12 percent of teenage boys reported that they've tried the substance, nine percent of teenage girls admitted to using it, as well.
Here's what the report said:
“A picture emerges of teens — both boys and girls — entering a largely unregulated marketplace (online and in-store) in which performance-enhancing substances of many varieties are aggressively promoted with promises of improved muscle mass, performance and appearance. This is an area of apparently growing interest and potential danger to teens that cries out for stricter controls on manufacture and marketing.”
The president of the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids Mr. Steve Pasierb claims that teens aren't using the performance enhancing drugs for the simple reason that they're rebelling, but rather because of the high expectations our current society places on looks. He said:
“This is about how you feel, how you look. They’re doing this thing to get ahead. … Girls want to be thin and toned. For a lot of boys, it’s about their six-pack.”
Which is why Mr. Pasierb urges parents and guardians not to focus on the wrong and right aspects when talking to their children, but rather the fact that these drugs are so bad for their health! He said:
“It’s not about illegality, or whether you’re a good parent or bad parent. It’s a health issue. These substances literally alter your body.”
Another super bad part about these drugs is that there's no certainty regarding what these teens are taking! Some of the products may actually be fake, and then who knows what the teens are putting in their body. The report said:
“It’s very difficult to know what exactly is in the substances teens are consuming, or what the short- and long-term impact on their health may be.”
We definitely think parents and teachers need to accept that many teens are using PED substances such as HGH, and that the fact that these teens are acquiring these drugs so easily is NOT okay!
They're way TOO dangerous not to be taken as seriously as other illegal substances!!
