In Vanessa Williams‘ new book, written by her and her mom Helen Williams, she gives readers an open and honest look at her life growing up, including sexual abuse, her Miss America pageant scandal, and so much more.
And now, in a recent candid interview, Vanessa opens up about another horrible experience in her life (also, written in her book) – the abortion she had as a teen.
She reveals:
“Being pregnant is the most frightening thing that happens in your life. I knew in high school that’s something that I was not prepared to do or fight or struggle with.”
She also gives some insight into the molestation she experienced by a female family friend when she was 10 years old:
“It was definitely a choice, because it didn’t need to be [in there],” Williams added. “It happened one night where she told me, ‘Come over here’├óΓé¼┬ªI didn’t know that it was wrong, but I knew that it wasn’t right because I wasn’t supposed to tell anybody.
I think I was highly sexualized because I was in fifth grade and I had this experience because it feels good, you’re like, OK, well this is supposed to be normal. That’s not normal for a 10-year-old to be seduced.”
Vanessa’s mom says:
“[I] had no idea that that had happened, but in retrospect, it kind of put into place some of her reactions during her preteen years.”
We applaud Vanessa for being so open about her sexual abuse and abortion. It’s sure to help many other girls out there who are seeking answers.
