He was hospitalized earlier this week after suffering chest pains, and died this morning from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
He was also a noted poet, director, and a father of two.
Here are some tributes:
We are so sad to report that Leonard Nimoy has died at the age of 83.
His wife Susan Bay Nimoy confirmed the sad news that the author/actor/poet/musician — best known for his iconic role as Mr. Spock on the original Star Trek — passed away at his Bel Air home Friday morning.
Leonard's death is being attributed to his end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The star announced he had the disease last year, attributing it to his years of smoking.
Our hearts go out both to his family and to the millions of Trek fans around the world who will be mourning this loss for years.
It is a sad day across the universe.
