64-Year-Old Man Survives 127 Hours Scenario In Utah Desert

James Franco and Aron Rolsten must be palming their face right now. Instead of learning from Rolsten's horrific 2003 Utah hiking experience that was portrayed in the Franco film 127 Hours, a 64-year-old man from North Carolina went out and repeated it!

Without telling friends or family where he was going, Amos Wayne Richards went to Little Blue John Canyon, the SAME Utah desert canyon from the film, and fell 10 feet to dislocate his shoulder and break his leg!

With only rain water for hydration and two protein bars for food, he crawled nearly 5 miles across the rocky terrain toward his car.

"I was actually following my GPS, crawling right on top of my feet print that I had hiked in on," he told sources.

Luckily, park rangers discovered Richards' empty camp site and tracked him down. The injured hiker reportedly hailed a rescue helicopter down by using the flash on his camera to catch the pilot's attention.

He is now recovering in his North Carolina home following immediate treatment at a Utah hospital for a shattered leg and dehydration.

Denny Ziemann, the chief ranger of the Canyonlands National Park, noted after the rescue:

"We make a lot of rescues of people, but we usually know where they are. They were either hiking with somebody and got hurt or if they were hiking alone, they told people where they were going."

PLEASE do not embark on any dangerous hikes WITHOUT telling someone where you are going! As much as our brains seems to be hardwired to think "it will never happen to me," it definitely can!

Franco Pushed To Physical Limits For 127 Hours Role

James Franco And 127 Hours Director Danny Boyle

James Franco didn't have to cut off his arm cut off in real life, but playing the part of man that did left some scars.

The Oscar nominee and host said of filming 127 Hours:

"There was a lot of physical pain, and Danny [Boyle, the director] knew that it was going to cause a lot of pain," he said. "And I asked him after we did the movie, 'How did you know how far you could push it?"

Clearly the method actor was willing to take quite a bit.

"I had bruises, scars… and there were some shots of my bare arm, and it looked like track marks, and that was the 'Trainspotting' Boyle, got me hooked on heroin or something. So I had plenty of scars. And Danny said he looks at the actor, and that the actor will say when it's too far. Not only am I feeling physical pain, but I’m getting exhausted. It became less of a facade I put on and more of an experience that I went through."

We're sure James doesn't regret a single moment of pain.

When all is said and done the actor still has two arms - and possibly and Oscar!

James Franco's New Movie Is Hazardous To Your Health!

At least they didn't hurl!

Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich recently held a screening at Pixar's theater of the new Danny Boyle/James Franco film, 127 Hours - which chronicles the real life story of a hiker who gets trapped under a rock and has to cut his own arm off to free himself - and according to sources, two people fainted during the amputation scene!

Eek! We're not surprised!

Danny Boyle normally doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable, and this sequence, in particular, must be pretty rough to endure!

We definitely want to see it still, though! Even if some of it is through our hands!
