Netflix's 13 Reasons Why has been polarizing to say the least.

But for a Colorado community still grieving over seven students who recently committed suicide, the source material for the teen drama was too dangerous to stay on shelves… for a few hours.

A Mesa County Valley School District official ordered librarians to temporarily stop circulating the book that 13 Reasons Why was based on, due to the mass criticism that it glamorizes suicide.

The order caused irritation from some district librarians, who called the rare occurrence censorship, perpetuating the debate about balancing freedom of speech with sensitive topics concerning teen suicide.

Leigh Grasso, the curriculum director for the district who decided to pull the novel, sent an email on April 28 to fellow librarians, citing media attention and recent events in as just a few of the reasons why she made her decision.

She explained to the Associated Press:

In case you haven't heard any of the hubbub, Netflix got a little less chill over the past week thanks to controversy surrounding its new show 13 Reasons Why.

The drama, based on the novel of the same name, is a serious exploration into the factors that lead a teen to commit suicide — including a graphic depiction of the act itself.

While it may be an important topic to discuss, many have said the show glorifies teen suicide; Paris Jackson called the show "extremely triggering." The resulting backlash has even led Netflix to create unprecedented warnings before the show plays.

But this is far from the first show to generate this kind of fervent debate. Check out 13 of the most controversial shows of all time (below)!

13 Reasons Why is Netflix's newest hit — but also maybe its most controversial ever.

The story of a teenage girl's suicide has been alternately praised for its unflinching look at the very real factors that lead teens to self harm AND blasted for glorifying suicidal behavior.

Canadian schools have warned parents of its graphic content and banned teachers from discussing it with their students. Paris Jackson called the show "extremely triggering."

So what does exec producer Selena Gomez think of all this controversy? It's pretty much what she was going for. She told the AP:

"We stayed very true to the book and that's initially what Jay Asher created, was a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story, and I think that's what we wanted to do. We wanted to do it justice and, yeah, that's going to come no matter what. It's not an easy subject to talk about, but I'm very fortunate with how it's doing. I'm overwhelmed. I'm very proud of it."

Whatever your reaction to the show, it is getting a lot more people to talk about the problem of teen suicide.

What do YOU think of 13 Reasons Why??
