Climate Change May Actually Be Good For The Wandering Albatross

It's well known that climate change has few, if any benefits.

Well one creature who may actually benefit from climate change could be the Wandering Albatross.

The albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird and it literally spends most of its life in the air.

As the climate warms, wind speeds increase. This means not only can the albatross fly faster and more efficiently, they're doing better in general.

They've been gaining weight and breeding more successfully.

They've been studied in the Crozet Islands in the Southern Ocean.

A researcher said:

"Winds have increased overall at the world's oceans, with some areas being more affected than others, but still the increase is global.

The advantage we have with the Crozet is that we have a long term record of the population parameters, and also the movements of the birds, which is a unique situation."

So even though climate change isn't good for everyone, at least it's not all bad.

Oldest Bird In U.S. Is A New Mom

Oldest brid in America

This bird is a cougar!

Wildlife Service biologist spotted the (at least) 60-year-old seabird taking care of her chick.

Scientist banded (marked) the Laysan albatross in 1956 when she was thought to be 5 years old.

The chief of the Bird Banding Program, said the albatross is the oldest wild bird documented by the 90-year-old bird banding program, which is run by the U.S. Geological Survey.

"She looks great. To know that she can still successfully raise young at age 60-plus, that is beyond words."

The bird, named Wisdom, has likely raised at least 30 to 35 chicks during her life. And we bet none of them call her for Mothers Day.

Endangered Albatross Found Nesting In US

An endangered species of albatross has been found nesting in US territory, Pacific Ocean atolls in the Hawaiian island chain.

The albatross was thought to be extinct a while ago, however recently it has been restricted to only two breeding sites, Torishima and the Senkaku islands in Japan, according to the American Bird Conservancy.

It has been said that the discovery of a nest on Kure Atoll and another in Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge "marks a potential turning point for the species."

The albatross was thought to have been wiped out in the 1940s due to feather hunting, however a few of them were found again in the 1950s.

The American Bird Conservancy is very excited about this new discovery because, "establishing another secure nesting site is one of the highest priorities for the species' recovery."

Exciting news!!
