Deciding On The Best Non-Dairy Milk For You!

De Fazio head shot

A FitPerez reader is looking for the best non-dairy milk available and wrote dietitian Lisa De Fazio for help, asking:

Which is the best non-dairy milk for you? There are so many different choices (almond, hemp, rice, soy, coconut) I want to make sure I am drinking the best one.

According to Lisa:

They all have their pros and cons, it depends on your allergies, tolerance, and dietary needs. Personally, I use almond milk. I love the flavor and I use the vanilla flavored almond milk in coffee, smoothies and cereal.

Some people are allergic to almond milk, some people want to avoid soy so they avoid soy milk. Coconut milk may be higher in fat, so some people avoid it. A diabetic who is counting their carbohydrates may avoid rice milk and go with a higher protein milk substitute. The bottom line is that it just depends on your individual needs and allergies. If you have no allergies and no medical issues, I recommend soy or almond milk.
