matthew morrison and matt bomer join 8

Go Matthews!!!!!!

Last month, we were THRILLED to hear that George Clooney will be performing in the L.A. reading of Dustin Lance Black's play 8, which focuses on the federal case challenging Prop 8.

Now, we've learned that White Collar star Matt Bomer and GLEE star Matthew Morrison will also be performing alongside George! YES!!!!!!!

Matt B. will read the role of plaintiff Paul Katami, while Matthew M. will read for plaintiff Jeff Zarillo.

As we mentioned before, the one-night-only event, which is being directed by Rob Reiner, will take place at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre on March 3rd, AND it will serve as a fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights.

Sounds like this will be something truly special!

Last month, we heard all about Dustin Lance Black's new play 8, which focuses on the federal case challenging Prop 8!

We'd heard that the play would premiere as a Broadway benefit reading for one night only on Sept. 19th in NYC. We also heard it would feature an A-list ensemble cast including Morgan Freeman, Marisa Tomei, Anthony Edwards, Rob Reiner, John Lithgow, and Bradley Whitford….AND Matt Bomer & Cheyenne Jackson playing husbands!

Now, the play about the Prop 8 case opens in less than a week, and everyone seem VERY excited about it!

Here's what president of the American Foundation for Equal Rights Chad Griffin had to say about the play:

prop 8 supporters fight against judge walker again

Earlier this month, we were very happy to announce that Prop 8 proponents' motion to vacate Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling that Prop 8 was "unconstitutional" was DENIED!

Now, proponents of Prop 8 are once again trying to fight against the Judge Walker ruling, on the basis that he's in a long-term same-sex relationship.

Yuck. Appeals Court Denies Motion To Lift Stay On Same-Sex Marriages In California.

Filed under: Icky Icky PooGay Gay GayLegal MattersSad SadLGBT

This is truly disappointing.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied a motion today to lift the stay on same-sex marriages in the state of California, while the federal decision to reverse Proposition 8 is appealed, without giving any explanation as to why.

As a response, the American Foundation for Equal Rights released this statement:

“Several weeks ago, we filed a motion with the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit asking the Court to lift its stay and allow California’s gay and lesbian couples to marry. We felt then, as we do now, that it is decidedly unjust and unreasonable to expect California’s gay and lesbian couples to put their lives on hold and suffer daily discrimination as second-class citizens while their U.S. District Court victory comes to its final conclusion.

It is un-American to deprive gay and lesbian couples of their fundamental constitutional right to marry. These are adults in committed, loving relationships who just want to live their lives without government interference.

Last August, the U.S. District Court declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional. We believe that the courts will permanently secure the freedom to marry for all Californians."

Once again, the rights of gays and lesbians across this state have been STRIPPED from us, and we don't even get the decency of explanation as to why!

Shameful and so, so wrong.

Especially since it's only delaying the inevitable! EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL.

It's coming, whether you like it or not!

Boo! Another Delay In Prop 8 Decision!

Earlier this month, we learned that California's Supreme Court was going to make a decision on "whether to weigh in on the federal Proposition 8 appeal."

It looked like support for a Prop 8 repeal in California was a strong possibility, but now there have been more delays! Boo!

Yesterday, California's Supreme Court announced that it would listen to arguments regarding "whether marriage-equality opponents have standing to defend Proposition 8 in court when state officials refused to do so," a move that will delay resolution of the case.

Here's what American Foundation for Equal Rights board president Chad Griffin had to say about the new Prop 8 delay:

"More than six months ago, the federal district court declared unequivocally that Prop. 8 is unconstitutional and that it causes grave harm to gay and lesbian couples and their families each day that it is in effect. We look forward to assisting the California Supreme Court to reach an answer to the question before them as soon as possible so that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals can affirm the district court's ruling and end the state-sanctioned discrimination of Prop. 8. We are hopeful that the California Supreme Court will also consider further expediting this matter so that it could be argued before the summer."

"The American Foundation for Equal Rights is committed to achieving the freedom to marry for all Americans. We look forward to taking this case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which 14 times before has declared that marriage is a fundamental right for every American."

Well said, Chad! Let's get this process moving ASAP!

Elton John Says "F–k You" To Gay Marriage Opponents

Filed under: Gay Gay GayLove LineElton JohnLGBT

Seems like Elton John has had a change of heart.

With the passing of Prop 8 back in 2008, Elton John said he wasn't a big fan of the word "marriage,' and that he and longtime partner David Furnish are "very happy with a a civil partnership" and "if gay people want to get married, or get together, they should have a civil partnership."

Now Sir Elton has changed his mind and had some harsh words for gay marriage opponents at the $3 million fundraiser for the American Foundation for Equal Rights earlier this week in Los Angeles.

Elton told the crowd, "It seems so ridiculous I could be with my partner for 17 years and we have a son, and my partner and I can't get married," then yelled out a "f–k you" to those responsible from keep him from getting married.

Glad you've changed your tune, Elton.
