This is so unbelievably tragic.

An Iowa teenager died Saturday after he was attacked by a group of bullies who taunted him with antigay slurs.

Marcellus Andrews was taken off life support Saturday night, a day after paramedics and police found him unconscious with severe head injuries.

Witnesses say they overheard the attackers call Andrews a "f-ggot" and other slurs before beating him.

His friend Nakita Wright tried to help her friend, saying:

Gene Robinson, the gay bishop of the New Hampshire diocese in the Episcopal Church, says that antigay religious leaders are the reason why bullied gay teens are taking their lives.

With antigay religious leaders making hateful speeches, such as those made by Mormon leader Boyd Packer, gay teens are made to feel humiliated and worthless, which contributes to their decision to commit suicide.

Robinson says:

"Just as many gay kids grow up in these conservative denominations as any other. They are told day in and day out that they are an abomination before God. Just consider the sheer numbers of LGBT kids growing up right now in Roman Catholic, Mormon, and other conservative religious households. The pain and self-loathing caused by such a distortion of God's will is undeniable and tragic, causing scars and indescribable self-alienation in these young victims."

Even kids who don't grow up in religious households are still exposed to the hateful and homophobic messages that are delivered through the media and even by their peers.

The bishop continues:

"It's time for "tolerant" religious people to acknowledge the straight line between the official anti-gay theologies of their denominations and the deaths of these young people. Nothing short of changing our theology of human sexuality will save these young and precious lives."

We agree.

And nobody stopped it, including the two ADULTS on board!

Shameful!

Three Long Island teens face serious charges of assault and harassment after they brutally tormented a young 14-year-old boy they believed was gay. The teens, two 16 and one 18, have reportedly been bullying the kid for awhile, but only this week did things turn violent.

According to police, the three teens allegedly kicked and slapped the 14-year-old while taking the bus to school on Tuesday. The harassment continue yesterday, as they got in his face and began berating him. On both occasions, two adult females were present, the driver and the monitor, but neither of them intervened, nor did they report the situation as they should.

We can understand not wanting to put yourself in a violent situation, that can be scary. But why would you keep quiet? That poor boy was being BEATEN and you just turned a blind eye?! How heartless!

Two of the teens were charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, and second-degree aggravated harassment, a felony. The other was only charged with third-degree assault.

We hope they get everything that is coming to them for tormenting someone like that!

And to that 14-year-old, we says this: IT GETS BETTER!

Minnesota Senator Al Franken recently introduced a bill, which explicitly addresses anti-gay bullying in public schools.

He has been met with opposition while trying to get his bill enacted, but he's passionate about his endeavor.

Franken on the subject:

“It’s clear that we need to do more to protect our students from bullying and harassment, and it’s time that we extend equal rights to LGBT students. No student should be subjected to discrimination and harassment in school, and we must tackle this problem at every level — local, state, and federal.”

Franken has stated that recent teen suicides resulting from anti-gay bullying has made passage of the federal Student Non-Discrimination Act a priority. We wholeheartedly agree!

Franken's bill would prohibit discrimination against students based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Any schools found in violation of the bill would risk losing funding from federal departments and agencies.

Senator Franken wants his proposed legislation in the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind law, which will most likely be voted on next year. He has 25 co-sponsors for the bill as of today, and he's expected to gain more following November mid-term elections.
