Hackers Compromise The AP's Twitter Account, Spread Lies About White House Explosions & Injuries To The President

Filed under: Legal MattersBarack ObamaTech TalkSad SadTwitter

associated press twitter hacked tweets white house explosions obama injury hoax sad syrian electronic army

Whoa! This kind of prank is NOT COOL, especially in the wake of the last week's awful attacks in Boston!!

The Associated Press's Twitter account was hacked today, and the person or persons responsible sent out a reprehensible tweet saying President Barack Obama was injured by two explosions in the White House!!

That is a horrible prank!! What a disgusting lie to spread to a nation so recently wounded!!

The White House quickly issued a statement saying both the iconic building and our President were unharmed and the AP's account was suspended once Twitter realized what a hacker was responsible.

Ugh! This is even more dangerous and reprehensible than "Swatting!"

As Twitter becomes an increasingly more legitimate distributor of news, security precautions must be taken to ensure these kind of malicious pranks can't effectively be played!

Houston Schools Use New Program To Boost Diversity In AP Classes

students-in-avid-diversity-class.jpg

Houston schools have implemented a new program called AVID, which targets minorities and other students who will be the first in their families to attend college.

Students sit in circles and engage in debates over many current issues, including online piracy.

They receive intensive tutorials, academic support and counseling and are placed with the same specially trained teacher for all four years of high school. This ensures that they receive the coaching and attention that they deserve to have.

When many of the students started in the program, many were afraid to speak in public and struggled with writing complete sentences.

Now, all of the students are enrolled in AP classes (Advanced Placement) and are in the school's top 10% and the National Honor Society.

Wow. That's incredible.

Teacher Ayasha Greene says:

"I cry at home some days when I look at their growth over four years. Before, they didn't believe they could succeed in AP."

Meanwhile, Principal Pat Crittendon says:

"We have got to tap into the ability of all students. We're having these conversations with students and letting them know that it is OK to be one of the smart kids on campus.

Early identification is key. When you look at nonminority students, their parents are on the front line to get their kids into AP. With Latinos and African-Americans, it's incumbent on the school to identify students and say 'you have this ability.'"

What a fantastic program. It seems like AVID should definitely be implemented into other schools around the country. It gives a confidence boost to kids who otherwise are afraid to try something new.

Loves it!

Digital Abuse Is On The Rise

Thin Line

This is disturbing.

An MTV/Associated Press study revealed over HALF of those surveyed have been the targets of mean behavior or fake gossip through social-networking sites or text messages.

A whopping 76% of 14-24 year olds say digital abuse is a serious problem for people their age, while 56% report actually experiencing digital abuse.

Unfortunately, that percentage of those experiencing the abuse is up from 50% in a 2009 MTV/AP survey!

The good news is that more people are stepping up to stop it.

Compared to 2009, more young people said they are likely to intervene when they see such behavior and speak up if they see someone "being mean online."

Other findings included:

- One-third have sent or received "sext" messages.
- 71% describe sexting as a serious problem.
- 15% have shared naked photos or videos of themselves.
- 10% shared those photos or videos with a stranger online (a decline from 29% in 2009).
- 41% of those in relationships have experienced digital dating abuse

For more information on this troubling news and how to empower yourself to help stop the digital drama, check out MTV's A Thin Line.
