A FitPerez reader is looking forward to getting into the holiday spirit by baking holiday treats, but would like to make them a little healthier this year. For helpful advice, she wrote our regular contributors and culinary experts from The Hot Plate, asking:

I love holiday baking but I'm looking for some substitutions to butter, oil and sugar. As much as they are delicious, I'd like to lighten up my baking. Any ideas?

According to the cooking experts:

If there is one thing we love on The Hot Plate it’s guilt free treats! Are usual suspects are applesauce, non-fat Greek yogurt like Chobani plain and even swapping half the fat for peanut butter to at least get some protein out of the higher fat content. The rule of thumb is to make sure that you swap the right fat for the right guilt free substitution. This can be tricky so make sure to try and look for recipes that will give you an understanding of how much you can swap without compromising the end result. Happy holiday baking!

If your recipe calls for butter, substitute ½ applesauce and ½ buttermilk. 1/2C salted butter has 900 calories and 92 grams of fat! 1/2C unsweetened applesauce has about 50 calories and 0 grams of fat!
