A Utah Teen Is Allergic To Water?! Get The INSANE Details HERE!

no title

A 17-year-old teen from Utah has an allergy that NOT a lot of other people have!

When Alexandra Allen was 12, she found out that she's allergic to water and that any contact with H2O will cause her skin to have an allergic reaction.

But despite the strange allergy that the teenager has, she's still amazingly optimistic and has a good head on her shoulders!

In a recent interview, Alex's father recalled the time his daughter was first diagnosed and what will happen to her if she swims in pools or fresh water lakes!

Her father said:

"Lexie broke out in an unbearable rash and had bruises on her elbows and knees because she was bleeding into her joints. At that point, we were pretty concerned. It didn't seem to matter what kind of water she came into contact with – chlorinated, hard, soft, fresh or distilled. They all caused a severe reaction."

After some testing, Allen found out that she has a rare condition called aquagenic urticaria that makes people break out in hives or welts thirty minutes after going into water.

So while she's had to make A LOT of changes in her life these days - like only taking five minute showers twice a week and cutting off her long hair to avoid sweating - she's speaking out now for a VERY good reason!

She said:

"We joked that we'd both found a way to avoid doing dishes. I'm told that someday, my throat might swell when I drink water, but if there's one thing I've learned since getting this, it's that we all have things to deal with in life. I'm hoping that by talking about this weird disease, maybe it will help the next 12-year-old who freaks out because she learns she can't be a mermaid. But I know that things could be worse. At least, I'm not allergic to dogs."

Lolz! So true!

At least the teenager is learning to cope with this strange condition! Hopefully she'll be able to have a normal life albeit one without a lot of swimming pools or baths!

But like she said - it could be worse! And she seems like an awesome kid so that should make everything a bit easier!

People Are Actually Allergic To Water!

water allergy

OMG! This sounds HORRIBLE!

Can U imagine being allergic to water? Because we can't, but unfortunately, some people actually are!

Dr. Alan Baptist, associate program director for allergy and immunology at the University of Michigan, faced the biggest challenge in his career when a young woman came to him to help treat migraine-like pain and reddish welts appearing on her skin when she came into contact with H20.

As it turns out, she was allergic to water!

Aquagenic urticaria is the term used to the describe the rare condition, which Baptist feels is largely undiagnosed because "if a person showers every day and has urticaria every day, their doctor would think they just have chronic urticaria."

Luckily for anybody who is allergic to water, at least they can drink it! The reaction only occurs when water comes in contact with the outer skin.

Still, overall, it's a pretty miserable situation for any human being. Not only can a sufferer not cool off with a dip in the pool, relax in a hot bath, or have fun with a water balloon fight, they have to weary of getting too passionate in the sack because saliva will irritate their skin too! Similarly, tears and sweat can trigger a reaction too!

Scientists can't explain how or why the allergy occurs, but Baptist was at least able to control the young woman's headaches and welts by mixing together a concoction of antihistamines, anti-cholinergic medications, and SSRI drugs.

Have U ever known anybody with a similar allergy? If so, how do they cope with it?
