Wow! This is a truly astounding story!
A 59-year-old woman in Minneapolis, Minnesota lives RIGHT NEXT DOOR to her son's murderer!
Although a shocking misfortune to some, her story instead proves that ALL human beings have the power to forgive others, no matter how terrible the circumstance.
In 1993, Mary Johnson's 20-year-old son was shot to death at a party by then 16-year-old Oshea Israel after an argument erupted between the two.
She admits she wanted justice and she got it when the boy was tried as an adult and sentenced to over 25 years in prison.
What started as a prison visit in an attempt to forgive the boy who took her son's life began what may be one of the most unlikely friendships we've ever heard of.
Oshea was released after 17 years in prison, during which he met regularly with Mary. After his release, she introduced him to her landlord and helped him get an apartment right next to her own.
In an interview, she talks about the the importance of forgiveness, saying:
"Unforgiveness is like cancer! It will eat you from the inside out. It's not about the other person. Me forgiving him does not diminish what he's done. Yes, he murdered my son, but the forgiveness is for me. It's for me."
When she puts it that way, who are we to disagree? However, Oshea is sang a different tune in front of cameras, saying:
"I haven't totally forgiven myself yet. I'm learning how to forgive myself and Im still growing towards trying to forgive myself and what is I've done."
Mary Johnson found the power to forgive her son's murderer, but the real question is, will he ever find the power to forgive himself?
