Alleged Cannibal Austin Harrouff Will NOT Be Facing The Death Penalty For Eating A Couple's Respective Faces

alleged cannibal avoids death penalty

We're sure this will spark some controversy.

On Thursday, it was reported that alleged cannibal Austin Harrouff won't be facing the death penalty if convicted for the crimes he's been accused of. According to USA TODAY, Florida state has decided to not pursue the death penalty if the 20-year-old is found guilty of first-degree murder with a weapon, attempted first-degree murder with a weapon, and burglary of a dwelling with an assault or battery while armed.

Assistant state attorney Jeff Hendriks noted in a statement:

"After careful review of the case and applying the statute that controls the seeking of the death penalty, it was decided to not seek it."

This is certainly surprising as it's said Austin was found biting and chewing on one of his victims' faces. Harrouff is accused of killing John Stevens III and Michelle Mishcon, as well as injuring the twosome's neighbor Jeffrey Fisher.

It's currently unclear if Austin's legal team is planning to pursue an insanity defense. In fact, the case might not be ready for trial until next year. Stay tuned for any updates!

This case continues to shock us.

When we first read the story of Austin Harrouff and his admitted double murder and cannibalism, we thought he had to be on drugs.

And we weren't alone — arresting officers were sure the "teen cannibal" had taken bath salts or their new counterpart, flakka.

But according to Attorney Nellie King the FBI drug tests, performed at the bureau's drug lab at Quantico, showed Harrouff was not under the influence of either designer drug.

Apart from "medically introduced" drugs given to the 19-year-old at the hospital, there were no drugs present — just trace amounts of THC, meaning he had previously smoked marijuana.

There was also ethanol in his blood, though it's unclear the source. King argued it could have been the chemicals Harrouff claimed to have drunk from his victims' garage.

Last week Harrouff plead not guilty to the murders of John Stevens III and Michelle Mishcon. We'll keep you up to date on any more twists in this disturbing trial.

This last minute switch-up didn't sit well with the family of John Stevens and Michelle Mischon — who Harrouff allegedly stabbed to death in August before trying to eat one victim's face.

John Stevens, son of the deceased John Stevens, questions why the daytime talk show decided to pull the episode just days before a grand jury is called together in the two first-degree murder cases.

Based on a snippet he heard from the interview, Stevens said the 19-year-old was clearly insane, perhaps a bit too obviously. Speaking to CBS12, he said:

On Monday, the 19-year-old, who was accused of killing a couple in August and trying to eat one of the victim's faces, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Harrouff has been hospitalized since August 14, the day he allegedly attacked Michelle Mischon and her husband John Stevens in the garage of their home, and his physical condition has only worsened since then.

After the frat boy's arrest, investigators theorized he ingested some chemicals in the garage that caused his esophagus, his liver to malfunction, and his lungs to fill with fluid.

Authorities also suspect Harrouff may have used the synthetic drug flakka — which would account for his bizarre behavior and "superhuman" strength during the attack — though blood tests sent to the FBI have not yet been released.

Harrouff reportedly remains too weak to provide a statement, through police confirmed he was was being transferred from a hospital to Martin County Jail where he will be held without bond.

Hopefully, we'll get more details soon to finally explain what happened in this brutal murder.
