A few hours ago, the Marlins held a press conference about Fernandez, and as you can see by watching the club's President of Baseball Operations, Mike Hill, speak (above), Jose clearly meant a LOT to that team.

Players, coaches, manager Don Mattingly, and the club's front office executives all gathered in the stadium to meet the media and discuss the tragedy that took place overnight.

It wasn't just Hill breaking down with emotion, though — team President David Samson spoke, too, reading off a statement from him and owner Jeffrey Loria:

The pitcher and two other unidentified people were pronounced dead early Sunday after a Coast Guard patrol found a 33-foot boat overturned on a jetty about 3:30 a.m. local Miami time, according to Coast Guard Chief Nyxolyno Cangemi.

The accident is currently being investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The Marlins, who were set to play the Atlanta Braves today, have canceled their game in light of the tragedy surrounding Fernandez (pictured above, left, laughing with an umpire during a game last week).

The team did release a statement on the matter, though (below):

Whether you agree with him or not, you have to respect the fact that he's speaking his mind.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Baltimore Orioles star Adam Jones says MLB players don't protest the national anthem because "baseball is a White man's sport." In case you aren't familiar, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made headlines when he sat during The Star-Spangled Banner.

Adam said:

"We already have two strikes against us already, so you might as well not kick yourself out of the game… In football, you can't kick them out. You need those players. In baseball, they don't need us."

Additionally, the 31-year-old would "never" sit during the national anthem out of respect for family members who served in the military.

However, the outfielder fully supports Kaepernick's decision to protest.
