Boy Scouts Recycle Their Uniforms

The Boy Scouts of America are going green with their uniforms.

The organization will soon offer jerseys made from recycled materials similar to those used in Topshop's eco-friendly denim line.

The three jerseys, "Americana" "Varsity Performance" and "Hiker", use REPREVE, a 100 percent recycled yarn fiber created from polyethylene terephthalate water bottles and pre- and post-consumer waste from manufacturing processes.

Pretty cool!

The Americana jersey is already available online with the others debuting this fall.

Organic Jeans Losing Steam

The New York Times recently published a piece that asked a pretty darn good question: where have all the organic jeans gone!?

A couple years ago a lot of brands hoped on board the eco-friendly band wagon, but now not so much.

Now companies are looking into sustainable ways to make their denim.

The senior director of the Textile Exchange explains:

"There has been a paradigm shift: it’s about water, toxic waste, scrap on the cutting room floor. Across the board we see companies figuring out how to do the right thing, do it in a way that’s economically viable, move the agenda forward and make a difference."

A good example would be Levi's latest attempt to better the earth with their WaterLess jeans.

Rather than using 42 liters of water to finish the jeans, Levi made it work with 28% to 96% less. The press release says by consuming less water, they're saving 16 million liters of water.

Not bad!

And as we mentioned at the end of 2010, Topshop is also getting eco-friendly with their denim by collaborating with Bionic Yarn.

Maybe all the other brands should give these two a call!

Eco-Friendly Denim Comes To Topshop

Topshop is following Gap's footsteps and getting eco-friendly with their denim.

The UK retailer collaborated with Bionic Yarn, which is backed by N.E.R.D's Pharrell Williams, on a 3 piece collection of sustainable denim made from plastic bottle fibers.

Amazing!

Pharrell says of the fabric: "the coolest thing about Bionic Yarn is that the fabric is actually superior to the average fabric…and the pieces look so good."

All three pieces launched on Monday and range in price from $70 to $100.

Hopefully this collab will lead to others, especially since there's so many bottles thrown away each year.
