Maya Angelou Was HOSPITALIZED!

maya angelou hospitalized unknown reasons no travel scary

We're saddened to hear that Oprah's favorite poet/author, Maya Angelou, had been hospitalized!

It was brief, luckily, and she IS back at home in North Carolina recovering — we just have no idea why she was put into the hospital in the first place! There are no details!

The only other thing we're hearing is that her medical team has ordered her to NOT travel anywhere for the next three to four weeks!

Such a bummer!

At 85, we hope she's okay! Feel better soon, Maya!

Rachael Ray Signs Copies Of Her New Book

Rachael Ray was spotted signing new copies of her book over the weekend.

She and her co-author hubby John Cusimano were at the Central Library of Philadelphia, just signing it up!

We previously mentioned that this isn't just another cookbook… it's My Year In Meals a year in Rachael's life of food!

Sounds delish!

Seems like the whole event was one heck of an emotional roller coaster, not what you'd expect from a book signing!

Dwyane Wade was recently at a book signing in Coral Gables Florida.

He was at a book store called Books and Books (great name for a bookstore) and he wasn't just in there sneaking around, signing copies of random books like Twilight or The Hunger Games.

He was signing copies of his book, A Father First: How My Life Became Bigger Than Basketball!

Taylor Swift Donates THOUSANDS Of Books To Nashville Library

Taylor Swift books

Aww! Taylor Swift is so sweet!

The country singer is giving back to the city that made her a star and donated 14,000 Scholastic books to the Nashville Public Library.

It's such a huge donation that it's actually the largest received by the local library to date.

You'll know when you are reading a book Swifty donated too. Each one, which can be checked out at 21 branches of the city library, includes a donation plate on the inside cover that will read: "A Gift to the Children of Nashville from Taylor Swift and Scholastic Inc."

Some of the books will also be used as prizes for completing the summer program or donated to low-income children, preschools and daycare centers around town.

Very cool move, Taylor!

McDonald's In The UK Is Going To Offer Books Instead Of Toys!

McD Books

Okay, so how do we feel about this??

McDonalds in the UK is about to start offering books instead of toys in their happy meals!

On one hand, we LOVE that they're promoting reading and education.

On the other hand, getting toys is a part of childhood — and since going to McDonald's is supposed to be a TREAT instead of an every day affair, we feel like toys would make it a better treat!

But, the book thing is only lasting through

Health Journal Says Romance Novels Encourage Unsafe Sex

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueSex

Romance novel pic

We love posting new health studies, but this one is REALLY reaching.

An essay published in the latest edition of the UK Journal of Family Planning & Reproductive Health is charging that romance novels are responsible for encouraging unsafe sex practices!

Comparing sex between characters in trashy romance novels and actual people, a relationship psychologist wrote in the essay:

"To be blunt, we like condoms — for protection and for contraception — and they don't. In one recent survey, only 11.5% of romantic novels studied mentioned condom use, and within these scenarios the heroine typically rejected the idea because she wanted 'no barrier' between her and the hero."

The author continues to point out that the literary genre could instead be spreading positive safe-sex messages, writing:

"In some Western countries, romance accounts for nearly half of all fiction bought; some fans read up to 30 titles a month, one book every two days. So while women's exposure to formal sex and relationships education (SRE) may be as little as a few hours in a lifetime, exposure to the brand of SRE offered in romantic novels may be as much as a day every week."

Uh-oh! We don't remember any prose in Breaking Dawn describing the Trojan that Edward slipped on before he consummated his eternal love with Bella! LOLz!

Does this mean an entire generation of Twi-Hards are going to give up on condoms? Ummm, we doubt it!

In fact, NPR has already pointed out several flaws in this psychologist's argument. The information is based off of only 78 books, all of which were were published between 1981 and 1996 before a widespread understanding of STDs hit the general public.

Sounds like the author of this essay shot off an argument a little prematurely, don't ya think? Ha!

Regardless, we believe it's up to the parents and schools to educate children about safe sex, not authors trying to make a buck off of their readers.

We'd say this argument is about as valid as saying all these vampire hotties frolicking around pop culture are encouraging people to develop a fetish for necrophilia.
