Dunkirk Wins The Box Office This Week As The Emoji Movie Struggles In Opening Weekend

no title

Another weekend, another new day at the box office!

Dunkirk is the biggest winner this week, thanks to a $28.1 million haul this week and a cumulative $102.8 million domestic pull through its second week on Sunday — and another $45.6 million overseas from 62 more markets.

The war movie has done particularly well in the United Kingdom, with a tally of $35.4 million this weekend — already surpassing the lifetime U.K. cume of director Christopher Nolan's last movie, Interstellar.

Meanwhile, The Emoji Movie — which had been getting brutally bad reviews from critics — didn't do so hot in theaters but actually outshot some of its projections, taking in $25.7 million.

Sony president of worldwide marketing and distribution Josh Greenstein seemed happy about The Emoji Movie's weekend, saying:

The minions have it!

Despicable Me 3 landed at the very top of the box office this weekend, drawing in the most money of any film across North America, and yet it fell far short of expectations, suggesting some sluggishness with now the third installment of the franchise.

Gru and his minions put up a respectable showing by most standards, of course: Despicable Me 3 took in $75.4 million from 4,529 theaters across North America this weekend. And yet that's a disappointment relative to the hope that it might do as much as $90 million in its opening weekend.

Overseas, the flick did very well: $95.6 million from 52 different foreign markets this week alone. Add that and its $75.4 million from North America to its early roll out in some places elsewhere in the world the past few weeks, and that gives Despicable Me 3 a total of $192.3 million globally.

Nothing to sneeze at, but still below expectations — especially for

This may be the last night for the Transformers franchise after The Last Knight disappointed so badly at the box office this weekend…

Transformers: The Last Knight brought in just $69.1 million from 4,069 theaters across its five day debut at the North American box office this week.

Yikes! That's a franchise low — and it'll put serious doubt on whether the series has a legitimate future beyond this movie.

It was a big winner for Cars 3 at the box office this weekend!

Also, since Cars 3 is skewing slightly male and today is, of course, Father's Day, box office watchers are expecting today may be bigger yet, with final Monday numbers expected even slightly higher based on projections! Nice!

Of course, Wonder Woman still continues to impress, even though it's not at the top of the box office. The movie took in
