Scientists Developing Malaria Vaccine That Could Eliminate The Disease

Researchers in the United Kingdom believe they have pinpointed the "Achilles' Heel" of malaria, a mosquito born disease that kills one child in Africa every 45 seconds.

Since the disease is spread by a parasite that invades human red blood cells, scientists believe they can create a vaccine to block the infection by focusing on a red blood cell receptor essential for malaria to develop.

Although there is no vaccine yet, experts are calling the discovery a "breakthrough" that has the potential to wipe malaria off of the planet.

Check out the video above for all the details on the science that may finally end of the world's deadliest diseases!

Spain Testing 'Powerful' HIV Vaccine

HIV vaccine

This is exciting!

Researchers in Spain are testing an HIV vaccine that has been deemed "much more powerful" than others that have been tested in the past.

Since beginning tests on humans over a year ago, the vaccine has abled 95% of the 30 patients receiving it to build an immunity, with 85% sustaining that immunity for at least a year!

That is a HUGE improvement because the success rate for previous vaccines has been only 25%!

There have been so many breakthroughs in HIV/AIDS research lately. Are we finally getting a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel? We hope so!

Scientists Closing In On A Cause For Lou Gehrig's Disease

With no cure in sight since medical experts classified amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, usually referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease, a MAJOR medical breakthrough has been discovered!

Researchers have found a common protein present in EVERY patient suffering from the neurodegenerative disorder that has been studied since the late 1980's.

What's the big deal about a lousy protein? It could be the CAUSE and no cure can be found without first understanding the disease's cause!

Check out the video above to learn more about this exciting discovery as CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta breaks down what the protein is and how it could affect ALS.

Breakthrough In Malaria Treatment

Breakthrough In Malaria Treatment

Malaria may not be a huge threat here in the US, but the disease kills nearly one million people a year.

Thankfully, researchers in Canada and the US have developed a new process to make the chemical used in malaria treatments more quickly and cheaply.

Said Canada’s Gary Goodyear, minister of state for science and technology:

“This new development in the production of a malaria treatment represents a major development in the fight against the disease. It will strengthen Canada’s position as a world leader in health research and provide a reliable and affordable solution.”

Malaria is the leading cause of death in children under 5 in sub-Saharan Africa, so this could greatly help their plight!
