NY Grocery Store Uses Scent To Lure Customers

Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueFood

Smart idea!

A New York grocery store has resorted to using specialized scent machines to release never-ending puffs of various scents such as milk chocolate, rosemary, grapefruit, and freshly-baked bread.

The store mounts the small machines onto their walls in the appropriate aisles so that if a customer walks down the candy aisle, they will be greeted with the lovely and delicious scent of chocolate, for example.

Angelina Khristichenko, the store's merchandise coordinator, says that ever since she's installed the machines, sales have gone up at least 7%, especially in the produce section. She adds, "I think because of these machines it makes customers hungrier," which means they're more inclined to open up their wallets and spend.

With the machines costing $99 each per month, the store's manager agrees that it's a good investment.

What a clever marketing ploy. We're surprised more stores haven't caught on to this idea. Now, if they only can make celery and carrot scents more luring…
