ryan lochte supports muscular dystrophy

Ryan Lochte is such an inspiration!

While the Olympian isn't swimming, he's visiting Capitol Hill to talk about the MD-CARE Act with senators in Washington, D.C. and is also showing his support for the Muscular Dystrophy research.

Lochte is currently the spokesperson for Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy, and because he lost someone close to him from this illness, he takes his spokesman duties seriously.

Fashion Designers Rejoice! Piracy Bill Brought Back To Congress!

lazaro-hernandez-and-jack-mccollough-design-piracy-bill-reintroduced-into-congress.jpg

This is GREAT news!!!

On Monday, New York Sen. Charles Schumer, reintroduced a bill that would provide more copyright protection for designers' creations.

The Innovative Design Protection and Piracy Prevention Act was originally presented to Congress last year by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, but very little progress has been made after its two biggest proponents, the American Apparel & Footwear Association and the CFDA, had to come up with a different approach.

However, now that Schumer got the ball running this week, hope has returned to the industry!

Currently copyright protection doesn't apply

The Smiths Go To Washington

Jada Pinkett Smith went to Capitol Hill and brought Will Smith & Willow while she testified in front of “The Next Ten Years In The Fight Against Human Trafficking: Attacking The Problem With The Right Tools” committee hearing at the Hart Senate office building.

Willow posted an amazing picture of her sitting in John Kerry's desk.

Can you say BALLA?!?!

Here's what Willow said on her Facebook:

“I’m getting radical on human trafficking!!!”

Heck yes, girl!

You're definitely doing the right thing.

We guess her daddy Will isn't no Enemy Of The State after all!

The grandson of Guccio Gucci made an appearance in Washington DC this week to support the two bills that would crack down on those producing and selling counterfeit goods.

At the Intellectual Property Rights in the Fashion Industry and Its Effects on Our Nation's Economy forum, Giorgio Gucci said:

"The people who are exploiting the work of others have no conscience. All women want nice things … so I understand how tempting it is … but any woman who carries a copy is hurting other women."

He also told the men in attendance that if they really loved their lady, they would buy them the real thing.

Ha!

The Fashion Industry Takes On Washington DC

ap081104012380_e.jpg

Last week, the fashion industry's first caucus was approved by the Committee on House Administration.

The group will now be known on Capitol Hill as the "Congressional Apparel Manufacturing and Fashion Business Caucus".

What a mouthful! They couldn't come up with anything shorter?

The caucus is headed by Diane E. Watson (D., Calif.), Jerrold Nadler (D., N.Y.) and Carolyn B. Maloney (D., N.Y.). Conveniently, the two states also represent the largest clothing manufacturing and design centers in the US.

Now that the industry has a voice, they hope to get funding to provide scholarships to fashion students, job creating initiatives and efforts that will help save New York's Garment District.

They're also looking to revisit the legislation of the Design Piracy Prohibition act, which would give designers copyright protection.

President of the CFDA, Diane von Furstenberg is a major advocate of this law and hopes to get it passed quickly.

Christine Brooks-Cropper, president of the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce, who helped spearhead the initiative said:

"We commend the chairs of this caucus, which will give us a platform and a voice on Capitol Hill to deal with various issues in our industry, whether it’s design piracy, job creation, intellectual property rights issues or the enforcement of counterfeiting."

Looks like they're headed in the right direction!

Congrats on joining the suits in DC!
