After Hugh Hefner and Playboy bunny Crystal Harris broke off their engagement, she let him keep Charlie, their Cavalier King Charles spaniel because she thought he seemed happier with Hef.

But now, apparently, Hef says they're fighting over who gets permanent custody of the dog.

He said:

"We both love the puppy. I told her if she wants to keep the ring and the Bentley, then maybe I can keep the puppy. I [hope] we will work it out."

Wow. So he'll give up a huge diamond and a ridiculous car just to keep his puppy?

We can TOTALLY relate!

Julianne claims: "He has become a dog lover."

And it seems to be true!

When his girl's Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Lexi, ended up at the emergency vet recently with an upset stomach the American Idol host said:

"I think that separation anxiety made her get a little sick. It worried me though, even though I've seen her get sick sometimes, she had this glaze over her eyes, that I was like, 'That's not Lexi. Where's my Lexi?'"

Your Lexi? LOL.
