Is your doggie a loud barker? What about an OBSESSIVE chewer?

Dr. Patrick and friends can help you with your canine's problem!

Andrea Arden, a multi-certified dog trainer and Animal Planet correspondent, has this tip just for you:

Invest in 5-10 durable, hollow, rubber toys that can be filled with your dog’s normal meals and special treats.

These sorts of enrichment toys provide a much needed outlet for some of your pup's mental and physical energy and will keep your puppy happily occupied 'hunting' for its food.

This helps prevent an endless list of unwanted behaviors, such as inappropriate chewing and excessive barking.

Baby Squirrel Tries To Eat Earbuds

This is just too cute.

This little baby squirrel was chewing on those Apple earbuds like they were a nut.

He's not very good at cracking them though.

Good thing too or else that person would be out of headphones and possibly have an electrically fried squirrel on their hands.

Q&A: Dog Destroys Chew Toys

All dogs love toys!

But what happens when your dog is a very good chewer and is constantly going through toys.

TeddyHilton.com reader, Tori, asked Dr. Patrick Mahaney:

I recently adopted a pit mix from the humane society and she destroys her toys. I was wondering if there was a brand of dog toys that would be good for an above average chewer?

-Tori

Dr. Patrick responded:

Hello Tori,

Thank you for your question. Like you, many dog owners seek the best option for a chew toy to pacify their eager pooch.

If you are looking for a toy that is not ingested but provides hours of virtually indestructible entertainment, I'd consider a Kong .

The Kong is like a hollow, rubber bell. It can be entertaining as is or filled with delicious substances to provide hours of amusement.

For my clients, I recommend filling a Kong with healthy, whole food based treats (lacking meat and protein "meal", by-products, artificial colors/flavors/etc), then capping the open end with natural peanut butter. This canine cocktail is the put into the freezer, then offered at a time when your absence must be pacified by an amusing and interest-keeping object.

Alternatively, you can use a twisted rope toy that is size appropriate for your pit mix. The rope can even have a "flossing" effect to remove debris from in between teeth. Just make sure to trim off any loose ends that could be ingested or remove the toy if she seems to be overly successful at destroying it.

Good luck with these (and other) toy choices.
