Pope Francis could be the first step in The Church's change after all!

Despite his stance on gay marriage (definitely against it), new details have been revealed, shedding light on when the new Pope argued FOR gay civil unions in Argentina as a Cardinal.

With the country on the verge of approving gay marriage back in 2010, the Roman Catholic Church wanted to stop it immediately, but he called for compromise for the sake of order.

Marcelo Márquez, a gay rights leader and theologian says he received a call from the Cardinal and he says:

You Can Do It, Maryland! Legalize Same-Sex Marriage!

Filed under: Gay Gay GayLegal MattersPolitik

We're so happy to hear that this could become a reality soon!

Proponents of the legalization of same-sex marriage in Maryland believe that they have enough support to make it happen during the upcoming legislative session.

If they can in fact gain the support, Maryland's Democratic governor Martin O'Malley has "publicly stated that he would sign a marriage bill into law." Hooray!

Here's what openly gay Democratic state Delegate Heather Mizeur had to say about it:

"We've been marching in this direction for a while now. It just took a little while to get us there, but we're seizing the moment. It's our time."

More from Morgan Meneses-Sheets, executive director of Maryland's largest LGBT group Equality Maryland:

"We've taken those small steps forward. It's time to live with the promise that is marriage equality. No other institution provides the legal protections."

"We're going to keep moving this issue forward until we all have marriage equality."

Right on, Morgan!

Not EVERYBODY is on board yet, though. Sen. Allan Kittleman wants gay couples to be granted all the rights given to married couples, but without the "stigma of religion."

Here's what he had to say on the subject:

"Civil unions would grant the same rights as marriage, but just shift the role of something that is viewed as a religious institution to something more secular. I just really believe, it is more the libertarian in me, that government needs to be out of something that is religious. The disagreement we have in society on gay marriage is from the religious aspects of it."

Boo, Sen. Kittleman! Don't cop out with civil unions!

We want to see same-sex marriage legalized in Maryland! It would be SUCH a wonderful, positive step in the right direction!

Illinois To Allow Civil Unions Between Same-Sex Couples

Filed under: Gay Gay GayLegal Matters

It may not be MARRIAGE, but it's def a major step in the right direction!

Starting next year, Illinois will allow civil unions between same-sex couples based on House legislation passed today.

The vote in favor of legalizing same-sex civil unions spurred debate on legalizing gay marriage in the state, but unfortunately supporters haven't been able to jump that hurdle quite yet.

Here's what Rep. Greg Harris had to say about the new legislation by the House:

“We have a chance today to make Illinois a more fair state, a more just state, and a state which treats all of its citizens equally under the law. We have a chance here, as leaders have had in previous generations, to correct injustice and to move us down the path toward liberty."

Here's what Rick Garcia, political director of gay rights organization Equality Illinois, had to say about the bill's passage:

“I think it was telling that as the bill was being discussed the governor came out onto the floor and got a standing ovation. We’ve taken a huge step toward fairness. We are thrilled.”

Here's what Bob Gilligan, executive director of the Catholic Conference of Illinois, had to say about the bill's passage:

"Marriage has religious connotations that we are not addressing, we are talking about equality under the law of Illinois…This permits certainty for those that are in committed relationships."

Boo to that, Bob! Obviously we're happy with the bill's passage, but now let's take that next step and legalize gay marriage in Illinois!
