Climate Change Will Affect One-Third Of Animal Species!

Climate Change

Scientists are predicting that one-third of land animals could suffer dramatic losses over the course of the century due to one awful thing…

CLIMATE CHANGE!

Even worse is that over half of all plants could be hit just as hard as their environments become unsuitable for their disposition.

As different ecosystems begin to collapse, there will be major consequences to us humans.

Homeless Polar Bear Wanders Through London!

Filed under: Music MinuteInspirationSad SadBearPolar Bear

Awww this is beary beary sad!!

But, what a simple, effective campaign attempting to reduce Arctic drilling…

The above Greenpeace video features an aimless, homeless Arctic Polar Bear forced out from her chilly, northern habitat due to money-hungry oil corporations and their effect on climate change.

The bear wanders through London's streets with Radiohead's Everything In Its Right Place ominously playing in the background.

Thom Yorke recently addressed the issue of our climate's precarious future, stating:

"We have to stop the oil giants pushing into the Arctic. An oil spill in the Arctic would devastate this region of breathtaking beauty, while burning that oil will only add to the biggest problem we all face, climate change."

So, so true. It's redicuouls to imagine how much money is being poured into an ultimately devastating source of energy, when it could be used to discover new, renewable ways to provide safe, clean energy for our already sick planet…

Are Dinosaur Farts The Cause Of Global Warming?

dinosaur-farts-warm-earth-web.jpg

Not quite…but these dino farts are deadly!!

Sauropods, or large plant eating dinosaurs like the Brachiosaurus and the Brontosaurus (now called Apatosaurus), are now the latest excuse explanation of climate change.

Researchers speculate that these dinos could produce 520 MILLION tons of methane.

With all that methane, the core temperature of prehistoric Earth could have been ridick!

As a reference, that's close to all methane produced from natural AND man-made sources.

Grodie!!!

The researchers, from Liverpool John Moores University, warn that their estimates are based on many assumptions.

Still, can you imagine standing behind…or within a football field…of that flatulence?

DEATH! LOLz!

Horses Used To Be The Size Of House Cats!!

horse-and-lil-horse-cat.jpg

This may seem impossible but during a global warming event about 56 million years ago there was a huge release of carbon into the atmosphere and the oceans raised the average global temperature 10 degrees over the course of 175,000 years.

Mammals reacted to this increase in heat by shrinking in size generation after generation.

The earliest-known horse, Sifrihippus was a 12 pound little thing, about the size of a miniature schnauzer.

By the end of this period of extreme global warming the Sifrihippus had shrunk down to about 8.5 pounds and was about the size of a house cat.

A researcher said:

"This, for the first time, tells us that temperature is what's driving the body size evolution for these horses."

So many animals get smaller and evolve to cope with global warming. The problem is that the same amount of warming that happened over the course of 175,000 years could happen to us within a century or so!!

"While our study provides a measure of possible response to global warming — that is, getting smaller — in a sense that is the best-case scenario."

He continued to say that if animals can't evolve quickly enough (which would be very hard to do in only 100 or so years) they will most likely go extinct.

"It can only get worse, basically."

Well that's not very comforting news.

Maybe we should all take climate change a little more seriously.

Hybrids for everyone!

World Bank Wants To Raise $1.5 BILLION For The World's Oceans!

ocean-needs-saving.jpg

World Bank has launched a new partnership to try and raise an astounding $1.5 BILLION for the world's oceans.

They aim to double marine protected areas and rebuild fish stocks.

The world's oceans are overfished, heavily polluted and increasingly warming.

None of these are good for the earth, climate change or any of earth's inhabitants. (That means people too).

World Bank's president said

Ocean Plankton Might Decide The Future Of Earth's Climate

plankton-control-climate-change.jpg

Tiny little organisms called phytoplankton have a huge impact on Earth's climate.

They are single celled algae and they can soak up 45 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year!!

They provide half of the Earth's oxygen supply.

These creatures have trouble growing in parts of the ocean with low iron concentrations, which is about 30% of the ocean, therefore making it hard for the ocean to absorb more carbon dioxide.

Thankfully there are scientists looking into this, and how it can affect climate change.

One of the scientists explained:

Climate Change May Actually Be Good For The Wandering Albatross

albatross-climate-change.jpg

It's well known that climate change has few, if any benefits.

Well one creature who may actually benefit from climate change could be the Wandering Albatross.

The albatross has the largest wingspan of any living bird and it literally spends most of its life in the air.

As the climate warms, wind speeds increase. This means not only can the albatross fly faster and more efficiently, they're doing better in general.

They've been gaining weight and breeding more successfully.

They've been studied in the Crozet Islands in the Southern Ocean.

A researcher said:

"Winds have increased overall at the world's oceans, with some areas being more affected than others, but still the increase is global.

The advantage we have with the Crozet is that we have a long term record of the population parameters, and also the movements of the birds, which is a unique situation."

So even though climate change isn't good for everyone, at least it's not all bad.
