At first, people thought this parent was kidding when part of the spiel said:

The National School Boards Association is partnering with the filmmakers and Penguin Books to make both the movie and the book on which it is based part of public high school curriculum!
Montel Williams, who led a similar effort with the 1989 Civil War film Glory, is the mastermind behind the educational effort. He said:
Monument Mountain Regional High School in Massachusetts have bucked the norm - they allow their students some special responsibilities!
Students design their dream curriculum. Once they're finished, and as long as their teachers approve of their plans, they execute their detailed new responsibilities!
Some choose to take on writing the next Great American novel, others learn how to play the piano, but all of the students learn something in the meanwhile.
We think this is a fantastic way for the school to ready their students for the real world where classes and homework do not exist.
