Even though some folks weren't too pleased that NBC decided to withhold the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony in London so they could air it for US primetime Friday night, it certainly paid off…and broke some RECORDS in the process!
That's right, 40.7 MILLION VIEWERS tuned in to watch the Danny Boyle-directed spectacle, marking it the MOST-WATCHED Summer Games opening EVER, and also the MOST-WATCHED NON-U.S. Olympics opener ever!
In fact, the only ceremony it falls behind was that of the 2002 Salt Like City Winter games!
Not too shabby!
And with the AH-MAZINGness that was the James Bond/Queen Elizabeth sketch, we honestly can't say we're too surprised!
If you haven't yet seen this, watch (above)!
And check out the full list of average Olympic viewers on record…AFTER THE JUMP!

Danny Boyle is a great director, and he probably has a very specific picture in his head as to what the opening Olympic ceremony will look like.
For $40,000,000 he better.
So there have been problems recently, with him apparently clashing with the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) who are going to cover the pool events.

Danny Boyle can basically do whatever genre he wants and it'll work.
He's the mind behind 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire!
Interestingly enough, he's been tapped as the creative director for the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, and he's borrowed some ideas from a very interesting place…

First we heard Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sir Mick Jagger, and John Lydon from the Sex Pistols were teaming up to perform at the 2012 London Olympic games, which was exciting enough, but this just keeps getting better and better!
Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle is serving as the ceremony's artistic director and revealed that the show has been inspired by William Shakespeare's The Tempest!
Boyle described the show's narrative as the recovery of land that has been poisoned by industrial legacy. The ceremony will commence with the ringing of a specially commissioned bell inscribed with a line from The Tempest: "Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises."
The "Isle of Wonders" themed live production on July 27th will last longer than 3 hours and also features the creative talents of director Stephen Daldry.
This is shaping up to be a pretty extravagant start to the Olympic games! Are U excited or what?

At least they didn't hurl!
Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkrich recently held a screening at Pixar's theater of the new Danny Boyle/James Franco film, 127 Hours - which chronicles the real life story of a hiker who gets trapped under a rock and has to cut his own arm off to free himself - and according to sources, two people fainted during the amputation scene!
Eek! We're not surprised!
Danny Boyle normally doesn't shy away from the uncomfortable, and this sequence, in particular, must be pretty rough to endure!
We definitely want to see it still, though! Even if some of it is through our hands!
