Zooey Deschanel is a NEW single girl!

The New Girl actor separated from Death Cab for Cutie singer husband Ben Gibbard almost a year ago, but their divorce had not been finalized until now.

The couple were married in 2009 and have no kids. They say the cause of their divorce was due to "irreconcilable differences."

The two waived their rights to any spousal support. Zooey is worth almost $3 million while Ben is in a super successful band!

Hopefully these two will stay friends!

Death Cab For Cutie Frontman Beat Alcohol Addiction With Running Addiction

Ben Gibbard

Alcohol and rock stars pretty much go hand in hand, but Ben Gibbard, frontman for Death Cab For Cutie, may be one of the rare exceptions.

The former hard-partying musician has been sober since 2008 and hasn't looked back since. In a recent interview he opened up about his sobriety, saying:

"Quitting had been such a positive change in my life. Nothing was going to make me want to go back to that. But I want to qualify that. I'm not, like, walking around with a chip in my pocket. I don't have a sponsor. I don't go to AA. It's not like that."

Let's hope he never needs a sponsor! However, whether he realizes it or not, he may have met his sponsor in disguise.

After ditching booze, he began dating and married actress/singer Zooey Deschanel. He's also substituted an addiction to alcohol with an addiction to running.

Ben has taken up running long distances and recently completed the El Lay Marathon in less than 4 hours!

He says his epiphany to get sober and live a healthier life came after an all-night bender in Big Sur, CA, explaining:

"It was so stereotypically my own little Kerouac Big Sur weekend and I remember being on the flight home, going, 'You know what? I really have to do something about this. This has really gotten out of control. But I have a friend's birthday tonight, and I need to go out and have a beer with him.' Cut to three in the morning, five beers and five shots in, eating a pizza. I woke up the next morning and I was like, 'That's it. I'm done. I have lost the ability to control this.'"

His sobriety didn't just improve his personal life, but his writing as well. He calls Death Cab's last album, Narrow Stairs, the most depressing album he's ever written, but thanks to the positivity in his life as a result of sobriety, Codes and Keys out on May 31, will be vastly different, as he explained:

"Once you realize that a positive act helps to balance out the negative act of being a writer, you become a more balanced person emotionally. I think the writing reflects that. The music is much more balanced than ever. Whether people are along for the ride is to be determined, but I'm proud that this record is a more even emotional palette than Narrow Stairs was. That last one is our most depressing record."

We're happy to hear Ben was able to successfully conquer his addiction and can't wait to hear for ourselves how his music has been influenced by a healthy lifestyle.
