For anyone sticking to a healthy diet, the temptation to succumb to the dark side and revert back to your 11-year-old self's favorite foods is ALWAYS present.
FitPerez reader Claire, a self-labeled compulsive snacker, is trying to stick to the straight and narrow path of healthy eating, but is having trouble resisting all of the junk food her boyfriend keeps buying!
Luckily, she knew where to go for great advice and wrote dietician Lisa DeFazio, asking:
Hi Lisa,
I love living with my boyfriend, but the man eats whatever he wants without gaining an ounce, no working out either. Before we moved in together I monitored what I ate by not purchasing junk at the grocery store. Now all his junk food is at our apartment and I have a very hard time resisting! We keep our food separate for the most part, but when he snacks on chips, ice cream, etc., I follow.
I already cook healthy meals for the both of us, but having sugary salty snacks at my fingertips is proving very hard for me and my lack of discipline and self control.
How do I gain better self control in this situation? Help!
According to Lisa D:
Hello Claire,
This is a challenge! First, keep his junk food in a separate cabinet that you do not use, then you will not have to see it! At times your will power will be better than others, and you will be able to be in the same room as he snacks, but when you cannot resist, and you are about to run to the cabinet to grab some chips, leave the room. Take a deep breathe and think about how you will feel tomorrow after eating the junk food- bloated, tired and upset that you have to get back on track!
Keep your own cabinet of healthier "junk food" substitutes for your sweet and salty cravings such as low fat microwave popcorn, red and black licorice, yogurt with granola, peanut butter and apples, cheddar flavored rice cakes, chocolate flavored rice cakes, hot chocolate packets, chocolate and peanut butter protein bars, tootsie roll pops, and granola bars.
Good luck!
