Gigi Hadid has one of the best bodies in the biz, but her curves weren't always embraced like they are now!
It's hard to believe, but it's true!

In a new interview the model recalls how she had trouble getting jobs when she first started out in the industry:
"When I first went to visit different agencies in New York, a lot of them were like, you have to lose a lot of weight. I would cry at night and my mom [Yolanda Foster] would be like, 'We're going to find the [right] people'."
"I'm kind of the model that everyone thought would always be the Guess, Sports Illustrated girl, then when I started to do high fashion stuff… people were like, 'Oh so we can have a girl with like thighs and a butt in a Tom Ford campaign, cool.' And then all of a sudden the high fashion people wanted to work with me and that's kind of how it works, if you just embrace yourself other people accept you in the same way."
The 20-year-old spent a lot of time in her youth playing sports — she was on a winning volleyball team in high school! — and was also a dedicated equestrian.
All of that translated into her being very fit and muscular:
"My thighs were huge, they were like rock! Growing up I was really athletic and I had a very athletic body. I had like crazy muscles and I [ate] like a man - more than the man that I eat like now, like a bigger man - and it was crazy but at the time I didn't care what my body looked like, I just wanted to be the best volleyball player I could be so it didn't really matter to me."
Even though she's not as muscular now, she still wants to maintain a healthy figure:
"Once I started modelling one of my things was like yeah, I don't need to be a man volleyball player but I also don't want to be like [holds up her little finger] two pounds soaking wet. And that's always something that I was very strong minded about, I just want to be a healthy role model and I haven't swayed from that at all."
She's not at all afraid to indulge, for one thing:
"I have a burger a couple of times a week, I eat a lot of burgers and for the first two weeks I lived in New York I tried a new burger like almost every week to find the best burger in New York - J.G. Melon."
But she knows that maintaining a balance is important:
"I can eat healthy when I want to and I can work out every single day and I can have the body for a certain runway show if I need to but that doesn't mean that I'm doing it in an unhealthy way. You need to find things that are still a healthy way of doing it and for some jobs that's just the best way to do it unless you start six months in advance… I personally would rather do the Master Cleanse for ten days than just eat salad for six months."
Sounds like she definitely knows what works for her!
