Ask A Vet With Dr. Jennifer Scarlett On Doggy Dreams

Dr. Jennifer Scarlett is back to answer yet another pet question!

The owner of a sleepy beagle wrote:

Do dogs really dream? Sometimes my beagle squirms, moves her legs and howls while she's sleeping - I assume she's dreaming. Could it be a nightmare? Should I wake her up?

Dr. Jennifer responded:

Yes, they dream and dream big. We know that dogs have very similar sleep phases as us—including the REM sleep—the phase in which most, but not all, dream activity occurs in people. There are also some studies in rats that not only support dream activity but show that they too seem to be dreaming about the activities engaged in during the day.

We can assume our dogs are often reliving their day. And just like with us, you’ll see muscle twitches, (thanks to an area of the brain called the pons, we don’t completely act out our dreams), and the telltale rapid eye movements associated with dream sleep in people.

Most likely your beagle is just inches away from catching that squirrel or snarfing up that half-eaten hot dog on the sidewalk in her dream so unless the vocalizations are distressing I say its best to let her finish her dream.

Jennifer Scarlett, DVM

We love watching dogs sleep.

Especially when they start running.

So funny.

Lack Of Sleep May Lower Men's Sex Drive

sleeping man sleeping

If you're pushing your waking life and brushing off the dream world, you could be inadvertently lowering your sex drive.

A new study published in The Journal of American Medical Association has found a lack of sleep may have a direct impact on the amount of testosterone pumping through a man's body.

Men's testosterone levels naturally decline by roughly 1% to 2% a year with age, but researchers found a lack of sleep could cause a 10% to 15% DECREASE!

In the small study, 10 men with an average age of 24 were monitored while sleeping 10 hours for 3 nights, then only 5 hours for another eight.

The significantly decreased testosterone levels were discovered on the last day of the 5-hour sleeping phase, during which their blood was sampled every 15-30 minutes.

Though small in scope, similar studies have found similar results. In 2007, a study on 12 older men between the ages of 64 and 74 discovered “measured amount of nighttime sleep in healthy older men was found to be a significant and independent predictor of their morning total and free testosterone levels.”

Testosterone won't just affect your sex life either! Research shows those levels play an important role in a man's overall health, including building strength, muscle mass and bone density.

Sleep tight, fellas!
