UPDATE 3:37 P.M. EST: Dylan Roof was given nine life sentences without parole in a state hearing following his plea.
Dylann Roof, 23, pleaded guilty on Monday to state murder charges in Charleston, South Carolina.
The self-described white supremacist, who went on a shooting rampage at a historically black church in June 2015, was sentenced to life in prison on these state charges — nine murder counts, three attempted murder counts, and a weapons charge.
Thankfully, following today's events, families of the victims will be spared an additional second trial.
Roof was convicted of 33 hate crimes in a federal case on January 10, 2017 and was sentenced to death. He is expected to be transferred from a local jail to a federal prison out of state to await execution.
