Newborn Otters Named After Olympians

new-baby-otters-born-chester-zoo.jpg

At Chester Zoo in the UK two new baby Asian small-clawed otters were just born!

They are so insanely adborz it's painful!

The cute lil' babies were named Daley and Rebecca after two U.K. Olympians: diver Tom Daley and swimmer Rebecca Adlington.

Get it?

Cause otters are great swimmers!

Best part is that these little guys are listed as vulnerable to extinction because of threats to their environment like pollution, habitat destruction and because of hunting, so it's great there's two more of these little guys in the world.

Who could ever hunt something so cute and tiny?

ASPCA Supports Ban On Exotic Constrictor Snakes

aspca-bans-boa-constrictors.jpg

The The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is supporting the House Judiciary Committee for passing H.R. 511, a ban that stops the importation and trade of nine nonnative species of large, exotic constrictor snakes.

The snakes on the list are the Indian python, reticulated python, Northern African python, Southern African python, boa constrictor, green anaconda, yellow anaconda, DeSchauensee's anaconda, and Beni anaconda.

You may not have heard of many or any of those because they're EXOTIC!

The ASPCA said:

"The pet trade in these exotic reptiles poses serious threats to public safety, animal welfare, and the environment.

Passing H.R. 511 would mark a significant achievement for the welfare of these snakes, for the protection of our native species, and for the safety of our communities.

The ASPCA urges support for this important legislation on the House and Senate floors."

These breeds of snake pose a threat to the environment, and are dangerous, so it's good that this new ban is in effect.

The senator who put the bill through said:

"While the animals pay the ultimate price, local governments and taxpayers are left to bear the enormous fiscal burden when dangerous wild animals are set loose or escape, or when they are seized due to neglect."

We're so happy that this ban went though, it will save exotic pets from people who can't properly care for them and save other people from released exotic pets.

Seven Arrests Made In U.S. Rhino Horn Trafficking

Filed under: Legal MattersSad SadRhinosAnimal Cruelty

Seven people in the U.S. have been arrested in connection with trafficking rhino horns.

The horns are cut from the head of the endangered rhino for ornamental carvings, good luck charms or possible medical purposes, including curing cancer (all of which are unsubstantiated or just plain false).

The assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Environment and Natural Resources Division said:

"The rhino is an animal of prehistoric origin that is facing possible extinction because of an illegal trade for its horns on the black market that is driven by greed."

Check out the above video to learn all about rhino horn trafficking and what specially trained park rangers are doing to stop it.
