While the final picture might be graphic (AFTER THE JUMP), it's totally astounding!

The victim was a 33 year-old man who had his face completely torn off in an accident that also crushed his jaw. He had the total face transplant only a few weeks after narrowly surviving — and just six days after the surgery, he was shown making a thumbs-up gesture from his hospital bed!

According to the doctors, it was the world's first life-saving face transplant carried out so soon after the damage. Other successful transplants took months or years to prepare, so this was pretty intense timeline-wise!

We're so glad that someone decided to donate the extra face they had lying around!

JK! LOLz! We TRULY are proud of whoever signed up to be a donor, even if they're not longer with us. It's a heroic thing to do, regardless if they've passed on!

After a 36-hour surgery, Richard Lee Norris got a new face!

And not just the outside part, we mean teeth, tongue, skin and jaws.

He can literally smell and taste and everything!

He was pretty serverly deformed after an accident when he was shot in the face back in 1997.

Now he's 37 and finally looks normal enough to confidently leave the house.

He said:

"I can now start working on the new life given back to me."

This is absolutely ahmayzing!

After hiding his disfigured face behind a mask for 15 years, Richard Lee Norris finally has a fresh start with a fresh face.

The Virginia man lost his nose, lips, and most movement in his mouth when he accidentally shot himself in the face in 1997, but a team of over 100 medical experts at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center gave him the most extensive face transplant in history on March 19th.

Plastic surgeons miraculously used facial tissue from his hairline to his neck, a new upper and lower jaw, teeth, and a portion of a tongue to give Richard a new look. Just 3 days after the 36-hour surgery, he's already moving his jaw, brushing his teeth, and shaving!

Chief surgeon Dr. Edwardo D. Rodriguez told sources:

“This accidental injury just destroyed everything. The rest of his friends and colleagues went on to start getting married, having children, owning homes. He wants to make up for all of that. He’s been living behind a mask. This is clearly a transforming event.”

It's pretty much a modern miracle and we couldn't be happier that this guy can finally try to live a normal life. Congratulations on the groundbreaking procedure and we wish Richard the best of luck as he continues his recovery!

A woman who was mauled by a chimp a while ago got a full face transplant!

She was over her friend's house when he friend's pet chimp escape its cage.

She chased it down to help get it back into its cage when it went berserk and ripped her face and hands off.

She has undergone several surgeries by a dozen surgeons and now finally looks more like a normal person, compared to what she looked like shortly after the attack.

She is now almost fully recovered from her surgery and interested in trying to get a hand transplant after her first one failed.

BEWARE: There is a shot of her face before the transplant, when it was just a solid lump of swollen flesh. It may disturb some viewers.

We're just so happy that this woman can begin down the road to leading a normal life again.

Absolutely unbelievable!

A Spanish man, who was left unable to breathe or eat without assistance after accidentally shooting himself in the face five years ago, was the first successful recipient of a full face transplant!

The procedure, led by Dr. Joan Pere Barrett, apparently took a full 24 hour, and involved lifting an entire face (including cheekbones, teeth, and muscle) and moving it onto the man, and he is expected to get up 90% of all facial functions back!

Although his body has since attempted to reject the face twice, it was successfully saved with medication, and he's being sent home to finish his recovery!

The patient's sister reveals that her brother is looking forward to doing "little things, like walking down the street without anyone looking at him, or sitting down for a meal with his family. Doing things that all of us do on a normal day."

We never stop being amazed at what modern science can help us accomplish.

We wish the man nothing but the best and hope that the rest of his recovery period goes by smoothly!
