Why Is Apple Fighting The Government? CEO Tim Cook Explains Why Unlocking Terrorist's Phone Would Be 'Bad For America'!

Filed under: Legal MattersTech TalkNewsViral: NewsControversy

We were surprised to hear last week about Apple's hardline stance on unlocking the iPhone of San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook for the FBI.

Though Tim Cook released his refusal as an open letter, many still don't understand what the fuss is about.

So the CEO sat down with ABC News to explain in depth why the corporation would not create a backdoor into people's phones for the government, saying:

"We know that doing this could expose people to incredible vulnerabilities. This is not something that we would create. This would be bad for America. It would also set a precedent that I believe many people in America would be offended by."

Powerful words. Do YOU agree this would endanger all Americans' rights?

Self-Proclaimed 'Cyber-Security Legend' John McAfee Offers To Help The FBI Hack Terrorist's iPhone So Apple Doesn't Have To! See What He Said!

no title

John McAfee is a cybersecurity expert, a presidential candidate for the Libertarian party, and apparently an overall badass.

And if the government takes his offer, the antivirus software founder and his rag-tag team of hackers will help the FBI out of a tough pickle!

Earlier this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company would refuse to comply with a court order to help the FBI unlock an iPhone used by one of the terrorists behind the San Bernardino mass shooting last December.

In a statement, Cook explained that creating the technology to bypass their products' security features would be "too dangerous to create" — because it there would be no way to guarantee control over who uses the virtual "back door."

And as it started to look like Apple was about to enter an epic legal battle with the FBI over the issue, McAfee might have just offered the government its own back door solution.

In an op-ed article published on Business Insider, the 70-year-old computer programmer said that the FBI wouldn't even need to ask for Apple's help if it hired better hackers!

McAfee explained that he works with "the best hackers on the planet," and claims that none of those "prodigies" will be found working with the FBI, writing:

Apple Refuses To Unlock Terrorist's iPhone For The Government — See Why They Won't Comply With The 'Dangerous' Court Order!

no title

Apple isn't on the best terms with Uncle Sam right now!

The tech company said it would oppose and challenge a federal court order to help the FBI unlock an iPhone used by one of the terrorists behind the San Bernardino mass shooting last December.

On Tuesday, Federal District Court Judge Sheri Pym ordered Apple to bypass the security on an iPhone 5 operated by Syed Rizwan Farook — who was killed by the police with his wife after murdering 14 of his co-workers at a holiday party.

In hopes of obtaining more evidence in the investigation, the Judge ordered the company to create special software that would basically act as a skeleton key to unlock the phone — but Apple refused!

Hours later, Apple exec Tim Cook released a statement saying that the company would not comply with the order because the technology would be "too dangerous to create."

The FBI says its experts have failed to access the data on Farook's iPhone, and are at risk of losing the data forever after repeated unsuccessful attempts to enter the password — which means that only Apple is able to get around its security features.

But according to Cook, what the government is asking the company to do "has implications far beyond the legal case at hand." He wrote:

"The F.B.I. may use different words to describe this tool, but make no mistake: Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a back door. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control."

Back in 2014, Apple and Google announced they tightened up their software with "full disk" encryption — which means their security was so beefed up, they could no longer unlock their own products!

But this re-engineering created a problem for law enforcement authorities, who say the new encryption hinders them from preventing and solving crime.

While police and prosecutors believe that creating a master key will be extremely useful when investigating crimes, Cook says that creating a "back door" to bypass their security is:

"Something we simply do not have, and something we consider too dangerous to create."

The tech company's next step will likely be to file an appeal — and since the legal issues here are complicated, this case could go all the way up to the Supreme Court.

In a new statement, President Barack Obama said it "was possible this was terrorist-related" but stressed the FBI investigation has just begun. He stated bluntly:

"We don't know why they did it. We don't know the extent of their plans. We don't know their motivations."

He also allowed the possibility that the shooting was "workplace-related" since one of the slain suspects was a former Health Department employee.

Michael Lohan's Ex Kate Major Arrested After Threatening To Slit A Passenger's Throat Mid-Flight

This was one frightening flight.

It doesn't sound like Kate Major had a very happy Thanksgiving.

Last week — the day before Turkey Day — Lindsay Lohan's father's ex was on a Jetblue flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Los Angeles.

But now, new information is circulating about the dramatic details.

According to an FBI agent, the 33-year-old seemed to be drunk when she boarded the plane, and only got more rambunctious once the flight was underway.

The agent explained that Michael Lohan's estranged wife "immediately became disruptive" when a flight attendant asked her to put her seat upright during takeoff.

And once they were about 10,000 feet in the air, multiple passengers claimed they heard and saw the Illinois native making threats at the person sitting next to her, calling her seatmate's wife "a bitch," and even threatening to "slit her throat."

Yikes.

It was so bad, in fact, that Jetblue employees moved the momma-of-two's seat so the captain could watch her during the trip.

But the drama wasn't over.
