A petition of over 275,000 signatures has caught the attention of the Boy Scouts of America who will review their policies, and could possibly vote on a restructure of those same policies by early 2013.
The Boy Scouts will consider a new policy for 2013 that would allow local charter organizations to decide for themselves whether to accept gay members and leaders.
The movement has been led by Zach Wahls, a viral superstar, and 20-year-old boy scout who met with high ranking Boy Scouts of America officials last week to chat about the huuuge petition he was admirably able to put together.
Here's what he said:
"One, is the fact that they were even willing to consider it — this is a really big development. It has also happened at a time when we have this level of online mobilization … that allows real change."
The movement was rallied around Jennifer Tyrrell, who can be seen in the video (above), after she was fired from her 7-year-old son's group as Cub Scout leader because she is a lesbian.
Here's what Zach said about Tyrrell and the movement:
"Change happens when everyday people like Jennifer are brave enough to share personal stories that inspire hundreds of thousands to take action, and that's what Change.org is all about."
The proposal will go into a Boy Scouts of America subcommittee, which will make a recommendation to the national executive board, a process that will be complete likely by May 2013.
