FDA Approves In-Home HIV Test!

Wow!

This is seriously ahmayzing!

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just approved OraQuick, an in-home HIV test!

It works by taking an oral fluid sample by swabbing the upper and lower gums inside the mouth and can provide results in 20 to 40 minutes.

That's so great. People will no longer have to wait and sweat it out for like two weeks while waiting to hear back from a doctor.

The agency said that even if someone gets a positive result, that doesn't mean they 100% have HIV, but that they should get some additional testing done in a medical setting to confirm the test.

This is such a great step forward in the global fight against AIDS.

New HIV Vaccine Approved For Human Testing

Yay! More fantastic news for the fight against HIV and AIDS is on the way.

Canadian researchers have received approval from the United States' Food and Drug Administration to begin testing a preventative HIV vaccine on humans this January.

The "unique" treatment uses dead HIV-1 virus to infect cells which will then be collected, purified and inactivated. Although it sounds scary to have a deadly virus injected into your healthy body, the vaccine is genetically engineered to be non-pathogenic, which means it won't cause HIV.

Dr. Chil-Yong Kang, the leader of the research team at the University of Western Ontario, has been working on the vaccine since 1987 and hopes to save the lives of millions, saying:

“FDA approval for human clinical trials is an extremely significant milestone for our vaccine, which has the potential to save the lives of millions of people around the world by preventing HIV infection.”

After all the hard work Dr. Kang has put in developing a vaccine that can potentially change the world, we sure hope he succeeds!

Check out the video above to hear the scientist in charge explain exactly how the vaccine works and what they'll be doing during the next three phases of human testing!

Government Vetoes FDA's Recommendation For Over-The-Counter Morning-After Pill

Plan B one step

Despite the Food and Drug Administrations recommendation to allow "the morning-after pill" to become an over-the-counter drug without age restrictions, the Obama administration has said it will remain a prescription for anyone 16 and under, while 17-year-olds must ask a pharmacist for it.

After reviewing data and research on the subject matter for ten months, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said:

Judge Blocks Use Of Graphic Warning Labels On Cigarette Packages

Tobacco labels

Boo! Such a bummer!

We were SO happy to hear about the mandatory graphic warning labels that the FDA imposed for all tobacco companies to display on cigarette packages.

Unfortunately, we're sad to report that the tobacco industry may have successfully blocked the government's efforts to visually depict how damaging their product really is.

On Monday, U.S. District Judge Richard Leon blocked the federal requirement because he felt the pictures were not accurate portrayals of the effects from smoking and instead were designed to exploit the facts, explaining:

"It is abundantly clear from viewing these images that the emotional response they were crafted to induce is calculated to provoke the viewer to quit, or never to start smoking – an objective wholly apart from disseminating purely factual and uncontroversial information."

The images depicting the harmful effects of smoking were to cover at least 20% of the package, but Judge Leon felt the labels would amount to a "mini-billboard" for the agency's "obvious anti-smoking agenda."

The strict requirement, originally expected to be implemented next year, has now been blocked until the tobacco industry's lawsuit is resolved.

Basically, don't expect to see the controversial labels that are used in 43 other countries anytime soon in the US.

Matthew Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, urged the Obama administration to appeal the ruling, saying:

"Studies around the world and evidence presented to the FDA have repeatedly shown that large, graphic warnings, like those adopted by the FDA, are most effective at informing consumers about the health risks of smoking, discouraging children and other nonsmokers from starting to smoke, and motivating smokers to quit. Because of that evidence, at least 43 other countries now require large, graphic cigarette warnings."

It's such a shame that corporate greed has once again won in court. While the tobacco industry filed the lawsuit against the FDA's labels in an effort to save profits, the courts forgot that the labels were created to save lives.
