Democrats Attempt To Pass Food Safety Bill

Democrats attempt to pass food safety bill

Democrats are aiming to vamp up the Food and Drug Administrations powers to keep food safe by passing a bill that allows $1.4 billion to increase inspections of food facilities, place stricter standards on imported foods and give the agency broader authority to order a recall.

The bill stalled after the Senate overwhelmingly passed it last week because the bill contained fees that are considered tax provisions and under the Constitution such legislation must originate in the House.

The bill would also require larger producers to keep detailed food safety plans and follow stricter standards for keeping food safe, which is leading many supporters to say passage is critical after widespread outbreaks of salmonella and E. coli in peanuts, eggs and produce.

Republican opponents of the bill say the new FDA oversight would be burdensome for farmers and also blocked the bill for months because "it wasn't paid for".

What do U think? Do U support this bill or do U think it is more wasteful spending by the government?

Senate Passes Food Safety Bill

Senate Passes Food Safety Bill

It seemed like it was doomed to failure for a while there, but the Food Safety Bill was finally passed in the Senate yesterday!

The bill will strengthen the power of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees 80 percent of the nation's food supply, greatly improving its ability to ensure safety.

The bill is the biggest overhaul of the Food and Drug Administration in a long time, and was a also a success in that it received bipartisan support in the Senate.

This is a great bill because it will help insure that the food we consume every day is safe! Plus, with how divided democrats and republicans are, it’s refreshing to see them work together on something!
