gay and lesbian adoptions triple

Fantastic!

Back in June, we were VERY pleased to hear that gay adoptions were increasing in the U.S., according to census numbers.

Now, we're thrilled to announce that an analysis of recent population trends indicates that "numbers of gays and lesbians adopting children has NEARLY TRIPLED in the past decade!"

Here's what Miami attorney Elizabeth Schwartz, who's coordinated 100+ gay adoptions in the past year, had to say about it:

Gay Adoption On The Rise In U.S.!

gay adoption on the rise

This is exactly what we like to hear!

According to the latest census, gay adoptions in the U.S. are increasing, despite all the legal issues that gay couples must contend with in at least half of the states in the country.

Here's what executive director of the Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute Adam Pertman had to say about the trend:

"The trend line is absolutely straight up. It’s now a reality on the ground."

And here's what Moira Weir, the director of job and family services dept in Hamilton County, Ohio had to say about it:

"The reality is we really need foster and adoptive parents, and it doesn’t matter what the relationship is. If they can provide a safe and loving home for a child, isn’t that what we want?"

We 100% agree! More from Bryan Samuels, the commissioner for the Administration on Children, Youth, and Families:

"The child welfare system has come to understand that placing a child in a gay or lesbian family is no greater risk than placing them in a heterosexual family."

This is SO wonderful to hear! Let's keep those numbers going up, and let's keep providing children with loving and caring families!

All Right, Arkansas!!! State High Court Strikes Down Ban On Gay Adoption

This is wonderful news!

We are SO happy to report that Arkansas' high court has struck down the state's law (Act 1) that barred same-sex couples from adopting children.

Here's what the court had to say about the law:

"Act 1 directly and substantially burdens the privacy rights of 'opposite-sex and same-sex individuals' who engage in private, consensual sexual conduct in the bedroom by foreclosing their eligibility to foster or adopt children, should they choose to cohabit with their sexual partner. The pressure on such couples to live apart, should they wish to foster or adopt children, is clearly significant."

And here's what the court had to say about the case of Sheila Cole, who was initially unable to adopt her own granddaughter due to her lifestyle choise:

"[Cole] can either give up her fundamental right to sexual intimacy in her home free from investigation by the State into her sexual practices in order to adopt or foster or forego the privilege of having children by adoption or fostering. We hold that the burden inflicted on her is direct and substantial."

Here's what Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese had to say about the court's decision:

"The Arkansas Supreme Court has removed a discriminatory barrier for loving gay and lesbian couples who, child welfare experts agree, are equally able parents. Too many children are in need of a loving home and the court has rightfully put their interests ahead of discrimination."

We couldn't agree more! Thanks for taking another major step in the right direction, Arkansas!
